“Irish planning body An Bord Pleanála has given the green light to Apple’s €850m data centre in Galway, originally announced in February 2015 but delayed by a series of objections,” Gordon Hunt reports for SiliconRepublic.
“The new Apple data centre will be in Athenry, costing the company some €850m of an overall €1.7bn investment that will see a similar centre built in Denmark,” Hunt reports. “When completed, the centre will power Apple’s online services, including the iTunes Store, the App Store, iMessage, Maps and Siri, for customers across Europe.”
“To be built on a 500-acre greenfield site in Derrydonnell, the company hopes the new facility will be open by the end of next year,” Hunt reports. “After considering the objections it received, An Bord Pleanála has given the official go-ahead to Apple. The 24,500sqm Athenry data centre will be the company’s largest data centre project in Europe.”

Another BILLION DOLLAR data centre. (Adjusting for the euro/USD exchange rate.) Apple ain’t leaving, no matter what European Union bureaucrats decree in the tax shelter “scandal.” Hundreds of onsite jobs plus the fanout effect on the jobs economy due to the tech industry “five-times multiplier effect” fertilises the metaphorical soil for a greener Ireland.
What exactly is Apple doing with its data centers? They’re obviously not making any money from them like Amazon, Microsoft or Alphabet. All those other tech stars are being praised to high heaven by Wall Street for pulling in gobs of revenue from their cloud services while Apple forever remains the black sheep of the bunch.
Is Apple going to build a set number of data centers and then bring them all online at once? I honestly don’t understand Apple’s intention of having these data centers just for themselves. It’s not like Apple has any services like youtube that requires petabytes of storage. Apple doesn’t even offer very much free base storage for users like those other tech companies do. With all the spare cash Apple has overseas, they could build a dozen European and Asian data centers for a billion dollars each and have that cost paid back by the next quarter’s profits. Apple can theoretically afford the most of everything, so why are they always playing as a minor league team to every other tech company around.
I guess they must know something you don’t know, or don’t care to imagine lest it upset your precious Narrative of Doom. Buy some Procter & Gamble stock, quit your hand-wringing and leave us in peace.
I think you haven’t been paying attention. On the earnings conference call a few weeks ago, Tim Cook said that next year, Apple’s services business alone would qualify as a Fortune 100 company, based on revenue.
