“A source who has provided reliable information in the past has informed us that the new MacBook Pro models, expected to be launched in the fall, will feature a Touch ID power button as well as the previously-reported OLED touch-sensitive function keys,” Ben Lovejoy reports for 9to5Mac.
“The KGI note which first reported the OLED function key display also suggested that the new MacBook Pros would offer ‘Touch ID support,’ but did not contain any specifics,” Lovejoy reports. “Incorporating it into the power button would clearly make sense, allowing the same one-touch process to power-on and authenticate as is possible with the Home button on current iPhones.”
Lovejoy reports, “The new MacBook Pros are expected to be feature USB-C, with embedded support for Thunderbolt 3. Claimed chassis shots show room for four USB-C ports, with MagSafe gone.”

YAY! the surface book put out by microsoft is seriously an awesome product. competition is a good thing and i kept telling my coworkers to wait and see what apple responds with. now, if they can make it so that the screen detaches??? oh man, look out…
Let’s get one thing clear – nothing Microsoft makes is remotely “awesome.” Grudgingly tolerable for certain purposes maybe, but NEVER “awesome.” That way lies madness.

I am desperate to replace my mid-2010 17″ MBP. I expect to be near to front of the line when new ones are available. I need better video editing capabilities!
Given how long people have been waiting, I have a feeling the new MBPs won’t live up to the hype. I imagine they’ll be bigger versions of the new Macbook, faster processors with a dedicated GPU, Touch ID, ‘butterfly’ keyboard, thinner overall, Thunderbolt and USB-C ports only. Heck, they might even get rid of the headphone jacks. Great computers to be sure, but why the long wait? Answer: milking profits on low component cost, previous-gen machines, as MDN has pointed out.
Nick, I believe that your take is overly pessimistic in several respects. I freely admit that I am not sure why there has been a lag in significant Mac updates over the past year or two. But I do not believe that it is simply Apple milking profits. That is not Apple’s style. I suspect that it stems from a combination of many factors including, hopefully, Apple’s effort to make a major leap forward in computer design to better sync it with the overall Apple ecosystem. Think what you will, but I see no point in sharing your abject path of pessimism.
Not sure how you interpret what I wrote as “overly pessimistic” or “abject pessimism”. I’ve read reports of Apple’s profits in laptop sales being strong despite the long wait for a refresh so it wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t in a rush to roll out something new for the Apple die-hards, who though vocal and enthusiastic in online forums represent perhaps 1% of their customer base.
Is it necessary to remove the MagSafe? I feel like it’s a waste of a perfectly useful USB port when need to charge your battery.
The OLED touch panel will display squirt gun emojis, iCloud icons and other items that users don’t want to see. Furthermore, it will display text in a stylish font that is too thin to read.
