How to turn your Mac into a spy cam

“I use a MacBook for mobile troubleshooting but my desktop Mac is an iMac,” Natalia Nowak writes for Mac360.

“It has the standard built-in iSight camera, which, with the right software, can turn your Mac into a spy cam,” Nowak writes. “Just install the Spy Cam software [US$9.99, Mac App Store] and the Mac becomes a very expensive but useful surveillance device.”

“Your Mac is valuable. Wouldn’t you like to know who is mucking around with your Mac when you’re not there?” Nowak writes. “Spy Cam uses motion sensor technology and the camera to turn your Mac into a surveillance device.”

Nowak writes, “Spy Cam is good for monitoring a babysitter, employees, pets, or even children.”

MacDailyNews Take: Could be useful to have your Mac’s camera activated by motion and/or timer. Also useful: video can be automatically uploaded to Dropbox.

Anybody using this software or some other solution to monitor via your Mac’s camera?

  1. No, but I use “Presence” software on my older, unused iphones to turn them into security cameras around the home. Same motion sensor capability plus video is uploaded automatically and email and iOS notifications are also automatic when motion is detected.

  2. I just have a script to auto-answer FaceTime calls that I turn on. Then when I’m out and about, I just FaceTime my iMac and it automatically answers, instant spycam. We use it to make sure our dog is okay when we’re gone for a couple hours. Works well and is free. But it doesn’t alert us if it senses motion, or automatically record. Those are nice features, but if you just want to be able to call in and make sure everything is okay, this method works quite well.
