Steve Jobs’ widow buys $15.3 million ranch in Florida

“Nearly five years after the death of Apple founder Steve Jobs, his famous billionaire’s rivalry with Microsoft founder Bill Gates has been reignited in Wellington, Florida, through his widow and daughter,” Jose Lambiet reports for The Daily Mail.

“As Gates completed the purchase of an entire street in Florida’s equestrian capital in June, Jobs’ widow bought a sprawling property across from Gates’ guard-gate, the Daily Mail Online has learned exclusively,” Lambiet reports. “Laurene Powell Jobs, a former investment banker who married Jobs in 1991 then had three children with the father of the iPhone, quietly bought a 3.5-acre ranch on Quarter Horse Trail in Wellington.”

“According to records, she paid $15.3 million – cash, of course. ‘She was looking around here for a while,’ said developer Stuart Roffman,” Lambiet reports. “‘She came to visit one of my other properties. She wanted something where her and Steve’s daughter Eve could practice horse jumping. She ended up not buying mine but she did get the one near Gates.'”

Lambiet reports, “Indeed, Gates’ daughter Jennifer, 20, and Eve Jobs, 19, have been rivals in several of the country’s show-jumping arenas and competed in Wellington this winter at the Winter Equestrian Festival.”

  1. Why would someone who lives in Palo Alto want to spend money or time in Florida?

Florida above Miami is Mississippi with a slightly better climate. And Gators. And Hurricanes. And Rick Scott as Governor .

Rednecks to the North, Cubans to the South and gators in the swamp in-between.

    1. Escaping California’s punitive taxes, perhaps?

Many folks who make significant incomes are moving out of California. And you can’t blame them. Texas and Florida are popular destinations.

The California exodus to Texas is reflected in market-based, one-way 26-foot U-Haul truck rental prices.

Torrance, CA to Plano, TX: $1555
Plano, TX to Torrance, CA: $1,011

Los Angeles, CA to Dallas, TX: $1517
Dallas TX to Los Angeles: $985

The cost of a one-way U-Haul truck leaving California for Texas is much more than the cost to rent that same truck going from Texas to California, suggesting that there are many more trucks and people leaving California for Texas than vice-versa.

  2. $15.3 would get her a lot more land around Archer City, Texas (home of Larry McMurtry), than a piddling 3.5 acres of Florida. Pffft.

Come on, Mrs. Jobs, we can find you a nice spread around these parts.
