Rather than accept that the police have a training problem, he choses to believe they have a “hate” problem.
Obama must choose. They can tell their Party to stop playing racial politics, call for calm, and get serious about the widespread problem of ill-prepared, under-trained officers in the field, or they can ignore those problems and continue to claim that these random and rare police shootings are a mark of systemic racism.
If they chose the latter, there will be even more blue — and black — blood on their hands.

To be fair, police brutality against blacks is systematic problem, according to statistics. Police has killed more unarmed black people than terrorists killed on 9/11 since that time.
The issue is not limited only to race, though, as mentally ill people also get killed in great numbers, as well as poor and less powerful people overall.

One rather odd feature of the public reaction to all this is that both the individual who was killed in Louisiana and the one who was killed in Minnesota died—in large part—because they were bearing arms. Much of the public, including almost every Texas peace officer I know, believes that Americans have an inherent Constitutional right to possess a gun for self defense.
The Minnesota subject allegedly had a concealed carry permit, while the Louisiana subject could have carried his gun openly without a permit. If they had been the friends or relatives of the peace officers who shot them, I suspect the officers would have vehemently supported their right to carry.
Because they were armed black men unknown to the officers, they were considered to be an imminent danger and were put down without hesitation. There has been nothing to suggest—apart from the firearm issue—that the Louisiana man would have suffered more than a few days in jail for disorderly conduct or the Minnesota man would have received more than a ticket for a broken tail light. They died because they were keeping and bearing firearms, although there is no known evidence (apart from officer paranoia) to suggest an intent to use the guns for any illegal purpose.
If there is an absolute personal right for U.S. citizens to keep and bear arms freely without government infringement (I will assume for the sake of argument that there is), then the post-Civil War Amendments 13-15 require that the right may not be restricted on the basis of race or national origin.
Therefore, the NRA and all the other Second Amendment advocates should be demanding justice for two men who apparently died because they were exercising a constitutional right and were denied that right based solely on the color of their skins. Why aren’t conservatives in the forefront of this issue?

Because I was a criminal prosecutor for 30 years in a county that was reputed to be tougher on crime than any other jurisdiction in the Great State of Texas. You should not dismiss me as a bleeding-heart liberal or as unfamiliar with the realities of law enforcement.
From time to time, it was an unpleasant part of my job to call a sheriff, constable, or police chief and tell him that Officer X—who was otherwise a fine fellow—needed to be dismissed immediately. He was a loose cannon who would eventually get his boss and the county into a million-dollar lawsuit that we would lose. The fireable offense was exactly the common logical error that your comment illustrates. Tim Cook sees the gap in reasoning that many apparently do not.
Just because A implies B, it does not follow that B implies A. That means that even though some (or most) B are A, it is not safe to assume that ALL B are A. For example, even though most women are weaker than most men, Serena Williams plays better tennis than literally billions of males. The leaders of the Mafia were mostly Italian, but that does not make all Italians Wise Guys. Similarly, just because some African-Americans do illegal things that justify the use of deadly force, it is not the case that ALL African-Americans are more legitimate targets for deadly force.
Peace officers need to make use of force decisions on an individualized basis: Is this person, here and now, behaving in a way that would lead a reasonable officer to conclude that the subject presents an imminent threat of death of bodily injury? Just because other people with his skin, hair, or eye color have posed a threat in the past is not relevant to that determination. If an officer thinks that it is, he should not be carrying a gun.
Las Vegas casinos make a lot of money from people who fall for the same error. The chance of a certified roulette wheel coming up Red is 9 out of 19 every time it spins. Just because it was Red (or Black) the last five spins does not make it any more or less likely to be Red on the current spin. Any system that tries to predict the future behavior of the wheel on its past behavior will eventually fall to the house advantage guaranteed by the green 0 and 00.
Similarly, just because the last five criminals an officer encountered happened to have been African-American does not make it any more (or less) likely that the next black guy he sees is a criminal. He might be somebody just like your mum who is going to the shops to get some milk. Neither he nor she should get shot without an adequate legal basis.
Sadly, the chance of a black man in exactly that situation getting shot by police is a good deal greater than zero… because the officer who shot him makes the same logical error as you. My reading of the officer-involved shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota this last week is that policemen who would not be particularly bothered by a white man legally carrying a weapon for self defense regarded black men under exactly the same circumstances as an imminent threat. Somebody said the word “gun,” and a trigger was pulled immediately and repeatedly, when a white suspect would have received the benefit of the doubt.
Shooting someone (or even arresting them) requires probable cause to believe that this particular person deserves it. In America and the United Kingdom, labeling someone as a criminal requires conviction of that particular individual in a courtroom on the basis of legally admissible evidence that proves, beyond a reasonable doubt, that every element of a statutory offense is present. Any peace officer who treats somebody as more likely to be a criminal on the basis of his race is a public menace and a lawsuit waiting to happen.

That is fantastically worded and elegantly said. The simple fact that people defending officers who perform these kind of actions cannot recognize their own inherent biases is very difficult to explain, and is some type of cognitive dissonance. Having to deal with this on a daily basis as I said in another thread, it is very hard to explain to people who do not go through the same experience, and who are willfully ignorant/dismissive of the greater issue at hand. Also refusing to accept any alternate viewpoint that conflicts with their own pre rendered or supposed ideas on a subject.
I mentioned on a another thread as well that when these two innocent men were murdered, there was an immediate attempt in the media to demonize them to a certain extent and brand them as criminals. The man in Baton Rouge did have a criminal record, however he had been straight for 15 years and was doing nothing wrong, and certainly nothing that warranted being shot multiple times in the chest. The man in Minnesota was a law abiding licensed to carry citizen, who was stopped for a broken tail light and was in no way a threat to anyone. As evidenced in the video, the officer asked the man for his license after he informed him of his firearm in the vehicle. As soon as he reached into his back pocket for the license, the officer shot him multiple times unprompted and for no reason. Then the officer and his parter made the driver, and filmed of the video step out of the car with her hands up as if she did something wrong.
This unfortunealty is very routine all over the United States, especially when it comes to traffic stops of black men like my partner. I cannot tell you how many times we have been in situations where an officer is needlessly aggressive, has his firearm drawn even before approaching the vehicle and asking for registration and license, and then having myself or my partner pass our license through a small crack in the partially rolled down window. The officer will then attempt to intimidate both of us for no reason, and on several occasions we have gone to court and had PA state cops reprimanded for behavior such as this. We are lucky, my family is well off and because of my job and status in the community I and my family both are very well politically connected, and can afford good attorneys who help these problems go away. Being that we are a mixed race couple, and gay, it’s even worse than you can possibly imagine. Although in your case I’m certain you have seen many instances of what I’m describing.
Yet when I relay these stories I am always met with “well you’re ok, you can use the system and win”. That is not the point… This should not happen in the first place, and no one should have to have immense resources or connections to simply exercise their right to be treated as a human being. Conversely the shootings of the officers in Dallas was met with immediate concern and outpouring in the media, and it was indeed a horrific and tragic event that never should’ve taken place. However, where was the same level of outrage when two innocent men were murdered two days prior?
As I’very said before, we need to have a serious discussion of race, and how these relations have been bad for quite some time. Now that almost everyone has a mobile phone with a video camera on it, people can now see what we have been talking about for years on end. And I believe it’s shaking them to their core. Yet some dig in and somehow blame our president for these problems, when in fact they have been systemic for decades and centuries in some cases. And now that there is persistent video proof people are starting to realize that there is indeed a sever problem. Hopefully we can have a real discussion and make some much needed changes going forward.

See above comment on logical errors. “Some A are B” is not the same as “All A are B.” “Some peace officers use excessive force” is not the same as “All peace officers use excessive force.” Pointing out a few bad apples is not “castigating the majority of cops who are respectable professionals.” Eliminating the bad apples will enhance the reputation of the majority, and should not harm it with those who can distinguish criminals—of whatever color or profession—from law-abiding citizens.
