64-bit version of Microsoft Office is finally coming to the Mac

“Apple hasn’t supported 32-bit Macs since 2011 when Mac OS X 10.7 Lion was released. Obviously, it’s been quite a while since Apple made a 32-bit Mac at all,” Rich Woods reports for Neowin.

“You might even think that Office 2016 is a 64-bit application because of this. It’s not,” Woods reports. “Today, Microsoft is finally making a 64-bit build of the productivity suite available, but only to Office Insiders for the time being.”

“If you want to try out 64-bit Office for Mac, you need to be an Office Insider,” Woods reports. “If you already are, you’ll have the option to update to 64-bit; if not, you’ll need enroll through AutoUpdate, which you can find by going to Help -> Check for Updates.”

      1. Yes. They are both 64 bit. Interestingly, System Profiler reports that I have two versions of each installed. iMovie shows both 9.0.9 and 10.1.2. Keynote shows 5.3 and 6.6.2. But in the Applications folder I only see one of each…digging deeper now.

    1. Are you sure about that?

      $ file /Applications/Keynote.app/Contents/MacOS/Keynote
      /Applications/Keynote.app/Contents/MacOS/Keynote: Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64

      $ file /Applications/iMovie.app/Contents/MacOS/iMovie
      /Applications/iMovie.app/Contents/MacOS/iMovie: Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64

        1. We write technical manuals in Word; multi section manuals, 450 pages, auto indexed, auto referenced, and they have to be editable on pc’s and Mac’s both.

    1. I’m grateful that it’s better now than in the noughties. I get the feeling that MS genuinely wants Office on the Mac to be as good as it can be. Under Ballmer, it was never allowed to be so. There’s still a ways to go.

      I now have a workflow where I do my composing in Markdown, and export it to a Word doc to set out the layout. Word just isn’t for content creation.

      1. That I very much doubt. It took apple over 12 months to allow customization of the ribbon for Mac users. And now that it has eventually enabled this, Mac users can only get it if they subscribe to Office 365. Those who bought the software rather than bought a subscription to it do not get the update.

        For those such as me with established work flows – it has meant Office 2016 has been a disaster. I have had to go back to Office 2011.

  1. Word is still much better as is sorrad sheet work iver apple if iur doing anything that requires anything past basic useage. I wish pages and numbers where as great ad keynote is compared to powerpoint. Pages and nymbers online stink. Unless your a homemaker orin grade school.

  2. So, a 64-bit version of a 32-bit program originally created in the 16-bit era from 8-bit methodology which behaves more like a 4-bit program created by a 2-bit company that doesn’t give 1-bit for their customers.

    Sounds normal for Microsoft 😀

    =:~)

  3. On Windows, Microsoft recommends using the 32bit version. So not sure why they would bother with 64bit. Actually I don’t understand why they recommend the 32bit over 64bit.
