Demand for Apple’s iPhone SE still outstripping supply

“Apple’s latest iPhone launch was out of the norm in a more than one way,” Daniel Sparks writes for The Motley Fool. “First, it came mid-cycle, debuting between launches of its flagship iPhones. Second, the phone Apple introduced was priced lower than any new iPhone has ever been priced. Given its out-of-character launch, investors were uncertain how the phone would fare in the market. But, so far, it’s looking like a success — so much so that Apple’s production of the new, smaller iPhone hasn’t yet caught up with demand.”

“U.S. customers ordering an iPhone SE on Apple’s website will have to wait longer than they would if they ordered any other model, AppleInsider pointed out on Wednesday. The earliest a customer can get a new iPhone SE online from Apple is June 28, or just under two weeks. Wait times for online orders of iPhone SE are similar in markets outside the U.S.,” Sparks write. “Apple’s supply constrained iPhone SE poses a problem: As long as demand for the new phone exceeds supply, Apple is either delaying — or possibly even missing out on — potential incremental revenue opportunity.”

“But there’s more downside to Apple’s supply-constrained iPhone SE than a missed revenue opportunity,” Sparks writes. “The type of customers the iPhone SE is attracting represents an important segment for Apple that could benefit it over the long haul: new customers.”

MacDailyNews Take: As always, demand outstripping supply is a nice problem to have. Hopefully, Apple will get the SE in balance sooner than later.

  1. Tell me about it. I don’t like to wait so I was hoping to grab one at the Apple Store and non of the 3 Apple stores near here had it available for weeks, I finally put my hands on an iPhone SE yesterday and there was only one model on stock. Was worth the wait.

  2. I bought one for the wife as she didn’t want a larger 6S. Now she’s happy and Apple has the revenue that it could have had months ago.

The SE is not taking revenues away from Apple – it is bringing in revenues that it should have had months ago.

    1. Ken, it does not work that way. Wall street says if you are not slitting your throat by selling everything in the first week, you are doomed.

If sales drop after the first week, you are doomed.

If sales do not constantly increase their increasing, you are doomed.

No wonder Apple is doomed. LOL

  3. Not surprised in the slightest. Many people, myself included, simply donn’t want a big screen phone. I got my SE a couple of weeks after they came out, and have already provided Apple with two more sales by showing it to others. I’m so glad I waited for this model to be released.

  4. Nearly bought one myself. Gotta upgrade sometime from my 4S.

I’ll wait for the 7, though. I suspect people who buy the SE – the iPhone and not the Camry – will wish they had also waited.

But if you’re thinking of buying a Camry SE, it will still be great years from now.

  5. I was at the Apple Store day one looking for a 64 GB Space Gray — sold out.

Ordered unlocked from Apple and it was cool to track online coming from China.

In upgrading from my beloved 4S with the most beautiful icons the world has ever seen, new look OS, flat crap.

That is my only nit. The upgrades to usability, speed, camera, et al — are remarkable.

Still hanging onto my 4S for life to shoot video and pictures, but more so to remind me how far Apple graphics have retreated from their height. And more importantly, not evolved … 😭

    1. Have faith, my friend. Lately there are signs of consciousness within Apple, and a willingness to embrace heresy that is positively Jobsian (remember how, after thinking over a difficult bit, he would change his mind on the spot?)

The walled garden is opening like a brave flower now. There may be an inconspicuous machine gun nest concealed in the rosemary, but the breathing room is welcome nonetheless. And soon decorators may arrive to help with appearances… I do abhor the boxy hedges and wish for new designs, like you.

  6. US Marketing 101a

The easiest way to get an American to want something, is to tell them they can’t have it.

All Apple products are released first in the US, the world’s (for a little bit longer anyway) largest market. How a product is received here sets the tone for the rest of the world.

That said sales of 4″ iPhones after the launch of the iPhone 6 represented about 13% of total units sold. iPhone production lines are geared for that kind of volume. I personally think 4″ iPhone production will approach 2.0X to 2.5X that amount during FY2017. I would not be surprised to learn that production capacity just isn’t there to address that kind of growth in the 4″ line.

  7. I picked up a 64 gig gold SE from an authorised store in Greece (not In Athens, mind you) in the middle of April when it was supposedly hard to find. No problem, they had all models. No wonder I look att “constrained” reports with suspision.
