Apple is paying tribute to the life of Muhammad Ali by featuring a large photo of the boxing champion on the homepage of Apple.com.
Accompanying text states simply, “Muhammand Ali, 1942-2016” and includes a famous Ali quote: “The man who has no imagination has no wings.”
Ali, one of the world’s greatest sporting figures, died at the age of 74 late on Friday at a hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, after having been admitted on Thursday. Ali died of septic shock after spending five days at an Arizona hospital for what started out as respiratory problems and gradually worsened, succumbing only after his wife and children arrived at his bedside to say goodbye, a family spokesman said Saturday.

Rewatched “The Rumble In the Jungle” yesterday…Ali WAS boxing to me… when he left it, so did I. Ali called himself “The Greatest” and for a while, he was.
I agree…Ali elevated the sport of boxing…and no one to this day has compared.
Of course, let’s not forget that he was a Muslim, and there are many people in this country, including the nominee of the GOP, who are anti-Muslim?

Muhammad Ali is one of the seldom cases that gets more disgusting (or shall we kindly say “more laughable”?) the longer you listen to him and his lack of education shines through the longer he is allowed to talk.”
A few comments:
1) I always wonder what the motivation is for someone who uses the death of a person who has unquestionably achieved greatness as a time to cast aspersions. It’s true that some have unfairly canonized Ali’s image over the years, but you have taken this to the other extreme.
2) Ali unquestionably did some morally despicable things in his life, but so did almost all people who achieved something great. Tearing him down for opposing interracial marriage in the 60’s (for example) is sort of like saying Washington and Jefferson were horrible people for owning slaves during revolutionary times. Slavery was an abomination, but those men were still great.
3) Ali went through a period of great change in his life, as great men often do. As Malcolm X did, he eventually realized that fighting for the civil rights of blacks and having allies of all races weren’t mutually exclusive positions.
RIP. The Greatest of All Time.
For the record: I agree Ali was the ‘greatest of all time’ in the boxing WORLD. Regaining the title twice is a remarkable achievement and unmatched as far as I know.
That said, the comments detailed above if correct — are disturbing at best and some might consider racist and inciteful at worst, pity.
Exemption: the MAINSTREAM MEDIA worrying more about Bill Cosby and Donald Trump, no time for Bill Clinton’s philandering or Ali’s long history of INSENSITIVE comments. Not exactly a fair and level playing field …

So glad you brought up Jim Thorpe, another top athlete of the 20th century, maybe the best all around. Grew up on an OK Indian reservation I believe. As a child I idolised him. Burt Lancaster portrayed him in a movie I watched many times. More evidence there are no level playing fields, not really.

But I wouldn’t expect an uneducated troll who decides to try and rip apart a persons character right after they pass away to know that. I liked the days better when organizations used to comment on happenings only if it was, you know, relevant to them.
Apple gets more rudderless every week.
These ridiculous social commentary, political posturing and environmental diatribes do nothing for the company’s core business.
It’s time the board correct this mismanagement before it does long term damage.
I’m not a Tim Cook hater by any means, I believe he’s capable, but getting mired in this nonsense.
You do realize that you could have directed the same criticism at Steve Jobs when he launched the now iconic Think Different campaign? I mean how could Steve take over the struggling company and make such a political and cultural statement?
Do you also realize that Ali was one of those featured in that iconic Think Different campaign, and so it is entirely fitting that Apple honor the man?
I’m pretty sure I outlined more than just this one instance as to the current state of affairs.

And your other criticisms of Apple’s involvement in social and political issues are also incorrect.
For instance, the environment. It’s not all about the bottom line. And the bottom line will be hurt by climate change, in more ways than one, anyway.
These social/political/environmental issues are what help us create the environment for prosperity and business success. Only someone truly shortsighted cannot understand that.
Good marketing and following successful campaigns can only be truly successful if the underlying products are themselves worthy and great.
Apple has not been making truly great products as of late, and its software has been especially lacking.
They need to focus like a laser on their existing and important products.
Steve Jobs was most noted for this in his successful turn around of Apple.
Lessons he had learned over years.

Guess these folks didn’t think of any of that. Think Different don’t mean what it used to mean. If I recall correctly IBM had an even more direct slogan: Think. In its day it was iconic. Mad Magazine even lampooned it as Thimk.
It is funny in fact how little thinking is being done these days, with the elections and all. Unless you read the book Thinking, Fast and Slow by D. Kahneman. It lays us all bare the same way the Bible does, but with science.

Would the media and other liberals be gushing about Ali and the “artist” Prince if they were white? I highly doubt it. I seems there is a concerted effort in America, especially since Obama got elected, to elevate blacks to a level that isn’t realistic.
Advertising is especially lopsided, and if that was all you saw you’d be led to believe blacks were 75% of the population and were the wisest and hardest working, and had the greatest family values. Sorry to all the white apologists, but reality doesn’t support that notion.
