Apple homepage pays tribute to Muhammad Ali, The Greatest of All Time

Apple is paying tribute to the life of Muhammad Ali by featuring a large photo of the boxing champion on the homepage of Apple.com.

Accompanying text states simply, “Muhammand Ali, 1942-2016” and includes a famous Ali quote: “The man who has no imagination has no wings.”

Ali, one of the world’s greatest sporting figures, died at the age of 74 late on Friday at a hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, after having been admitted on Thursday. Ali died of septic shock after spending five days at an Arizona hospital for what started out as respiratory problems and gradually worsened, succumbing only after his wife and children arrived at his bedside to say goodbye, a family spokesman said Saturday.

MacDailyNews Take:

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing. — Muhammad Ali

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. — Steve Jobs

    1. I agree…Ali elevated the sport of boxing…and no one to this day has compared.

Of course, let’s not forget that he was a Muslim, and there are many people in this country, including the nominee of the GOP, who are anti-Muslim?

  1. Quote from: http://sheikyermami.com/2016/06/muhammad-ali-was-no-friend-of-mine/

    “Muhammad Ali on integration:

“We who follow the teachings of Elijah Muhammad (leader of the Nation of Islam) don’t want to be forced to integrate. Integration is wrong. We don’t want to live with the white man”

    Muhammad Ali on intermarriage:

“No intelligent black man or black woman in his or her right black mind wants white boys and white girls coming to their homes to marry their black sons and daughters.”

Muhammad Ali on the need for a separate black homeland:

“You got the white racists who believe in separation such as I believe: One day the black people of America must go to self, clean up self, help self, do for self. I recognize [the white racists].”

“Black and white are disagreeable in peace, they can’t get along together… Worked 400 years, 16 hours a day from sun up to sun down, without a payday, that we should now be repaid. Don’t give us nuttn and give us or repay us: You got 50 states and we make up 10% of the population then divide up 10% of the land… Now that we’re no longer slaves and we can’t get along just let me go and live by myself.”

    Muhammad Ali on brotherhood:

“We’re not all brothers. You can say we’re brothers, but we’re not.”

    Muhammad Ali on Al-Qaeda:

“I’ve opened up businesses across the country, selling products and I don’t want to say… the wrong thing and hurt my business”

    Muhammad Ali on homosexuality:

“All Jews and gentiles are devils… Blacks are no devils… Everything black people doing wrong comes from [the white people]: Drinking, smoking, prostitution, homosexuality, stealing, gambling: It all comes from [the white people]”

Muhammad Ali on killing blacks for having relationships with whites:

In an interview with Playboy Ali said “A black man should be killed if he’s messing with a white woman.” When the interviewer asked about black women crossing the colour barrier, Ali responded: “Then she dies. Kill her, too.”
The Playboy journalist, who interviewed the boxer, was closer to the mark when he observed of his subject: “You’re beginning to sound like a carbon copy of a white racist.”

    Martin Luther on Muhammad Ali:

“When Cassius Clay joined the Black Muslims he became a champion of the racial segregation and that is what we are fighting against.”

    Martin Luther King

Just watch Ali’s crazy-eye’d rants on the External link, opens in new window…TV interview with Michael Parkinson. Aside from his arrogant discussion manners, Ali can hardly control his body and spews dangerous extremisms like

“You’re a white man and your knowledge is nuttin’ to a Muslim.”
“My leader is Elijah Muhammad who preaches the doom of America“
“You and this TV show is nuttin’ to Muhammad Ali. It ain’t no way you can tackle me. All of you are tricky… the white Englishmen tricked us out of Africa”
“I am not just a boxer. I am told by Elijah Mohammed I am educated”
“I could talk all week a million of subjects and you [fingerpointing and shouting at Michael Parkinson] do not have enough wisdom to call on me on television… You are too small mentally to tackle me on nottin’ that I represent”
“The Muslims are the most respected people in America, we are the cleanest“
Ali: “It’s a fact that white people hate black people”
    Michael Parkinson: “That’s not true”
Ali (interrupting): “What you mean it’s not true? You’re the biggest hypocrite in the world”
“How you gonna get me on a TV and trap me? Ain’t no way. You can’t beat me physically nor mentally“
To Michael Parkinson: “You are really a joke!”
Muhammad Ali is one of the seldom cases that gets more disgusting (or shall we kindly say “more laughable”?) the longer you listen to him and his lack of education shines through the longer he is allowed to talk.”

    1. A few comments:

      1) I always wonder what the motivation is for someone who uses the death of a person who has unquestionably achieved greatness as a time to cast aspersions. It’s true that some have unfairly canonized Ali’s image over the years, but you have taken this to the other extreme.

      2) Ali unquestionably did some morally despicable things in his life, but so did almost all people who achieved something great. Tearing him down for opposing interracial marriage in the 60’s (for example) is sort of like saying Washington and Jefferson were horrible people for owning slaves during revolutionary times. Slavery was an abomination, but those men were still great.

      3) Ali went through a period of great change in his life, as great men often do. As Malcolm X did, he eventually realized that fighting for the civil rights of blacks and having allies of all races weren’t mutually exclusive positions.

RIP. The Greatest of All Time.

      1. For the record: I agree Ali was the ‘greatest of all time’ in the boxing WORLD. Regaining the title twice is a remarkable achievement and unmatched as far as I know.

That said, the comments detailed above if correct — are disturbing at best and some might consider racist and inciteful at worst, pity.

Exemption: the MAINSTREAM MEDIA worrying more about Bill Cosby and Donald Trump, no time for Bill Clinton’s philandering or Ali’s long history of INSENSITIVE comments. Not exactly a fair and level playing field …

You know I’m right, so caution, no spin here … 🙉🙊🙈

BTW, the ‘greatest athlete’ ever and multi-sport amateur and pro player — hands down — JIM THORPE! 👑👍🏆

        1. So glad you brought up Jim Thorpe, another top athlete of the 20th century, maybe the best all around. Grew up on an OK Indian reservation I believe. As a child I idolised him. Burt Lancaster portrayed him in a movie I watched many times. More evidence there are no level playing fields, not really.

        2. My dear, Jim Thorpe was chosen the athlete of the century by a major media outlet ( Time or USA TODAY) that my misty mind cannot remember many years ago.

He is ‘da undisputed KING. 👑

Jim Thorpe is resting quietly on a hill in the lovely, quaint, Victorian mountain village in Jim Thorpe, PA. I have paid my respects. 😎🚗🍾👏🏻

It’s high time I orde the movie of his life …

    2. All of those quotes are from when Ali first joined the Nation of Islam. His views changed greatly after he left them. But I wouldn’t expect an uneducated troll who decides to try and rip apart a persons character right after they pass away to know that. Don’t worry, one Black man being honoured by the world for a couple of days is no threat to the leg up in the world you were born with. Oh, and please don’t get into debat mode. I won’t answer. Said all I wanted to say. So funny that the people that Feel the most threatened in the US are the ones that have it the easiest… #RIPALI

  2. Tim the social activist strikes again!
What is the link between Apple and Muhammad Ali, exactly?

I liked the days better when organizations used to comment on happenings only if it was, you know, relevant to them.

  3. Apple gets more rudderless every week.

These ridiculous social commentary, political posturing and environmental diatribes do nothing for the company’s core business.

It’s time the board correct this mismanagement before it does long term damage.
I’m not a Tim Cook hater by any means, I believe he’s capable, but getting mired in this nonsense.

    1. You do realize that you could have directed the same criticism at Steve Jobs when he launched the now iconic Think Different campaign? I mean how could Steve take over the struggling company and make such a political and cultural statement?

Do you also realize that Ali was one of those featured in that iconic Think Different campaign, and so it is entirely fitting that Apple honor the man?

        1. And your other criticisms of Apple’s involvement in social and political issues are also incorrect.

For instance, the environment. It’s not all about the bottom line. And the bottom line will be hurt by climate change, in more ways than one, anyway.

These social/political/environmental issues are what help us create the environment for prosperity and business success. Only someone truly shortsighted cannot understand that.

        2. Good marketing and following successful campaigns can only be truly successful if the underlying products are themselves worthy and great.

Apple has not been making truly great products as of late, and its software has been especially lacking.

They need to focus like a laser on their existing and important products.

Steve Jobs was most noted for this in his successful turn around of Apple.
Lessons he had learned over years.

        3. That’s how capitalism works these days in case you´re wondering why Apple acts the way it does…
Get a good book on post-modern economics and enlighten yourself. Really.

      1. Guess these folks didn’t think of any of that. Think Different don’t mean what it used to mean. If I recall correctly IBM had an even more direct slogan: Think. In its day it was iconic. Mad Magazine even lampooned it as Thimk.

It is funny in fact how little thinking is being done these days, with the elections and all. Unless you read the book Thinking, Fast and Slow by D. Kahneman. It lays us all bare the same way the Bible does, but with science.

  4. Would the media and other liberals be gushing about Ali and the “artist” Prince if they were white? I highly doubt it. I seems there is a concerted effort in America, especially since Obama got elected, to elevate blacks to a level that isn’t realistic.

Advertising is especially lopsided, and if that was all you saw you’d be led to believe blacks were 75% of the population and were the wisest and hardest working, and had the greatest family values. Sorry to all the white apologists, but reality doesn’t support that notion.

      1. No one pulls the ‘racist’ trigger name calling faster than a liberal loosing an argument, wadeless.

Know the saying, something like a liberal does not get mad when you LIE about them — they only get mad when you tell the TRUTH about them. 🙉🙊🙈

Reality is boundless and knows no labels …

    1. @Realist: “media and other liberals . . . gushing about Ali”?????
Mitch McConnell: “He was more than just a boxer. He was The Greatest.”
Donald Trump: “A truly great champion and wonderful guy”
George W. Bush: “[He] was an iconic and historic figure who thrilled, entertained, influenced and inspired millions.”
That’s certainly a lot of gushing by those famous liberals.

  5. Ali hated Jews, Gentiles and in particular blamed white people for the immoral behavior of Homosexuality. He praised George Wallace and believed that Black and Whites would be separate.

He gets a pass for bigotry and hatred and Apple puts him on the Home page. wonder who’s next?

Does anyone at Apple understand that when they take Political stands against what they perceive as racism and homophobia, that putting Ali on their Home page is an insult to all of those that truly understand what Ali really stood for?

    Idiots…
