Analyst: Next-gen iPhone to drop 16GB in favor of 32GB for base models

“An IHS Technology analyst has posted on Chinese social media that company supply chain research indicates that the iPhone 7 will feature 32 GB storage as the $199 base model, which would mean Apple would finally drop the much-loathed 16 GB SKU from its lineup with its new flagship smartphone expected in the fall,” Benjamin Mayo reports for 9to5Mac.

“The analyst also claims that iPhone 7 will feature 2 GB of RAM, the same specification as iPhone 6s,” Mayo reports. “It is unclear if the analyst is referring to the iPhone 7 as a category or the specific 4.7 inch model.”

“KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported that the larger 5.5 inch iPhone 7 Plus will be equipped with 3GB RAM to handle the processing needs demanded by the dual-camera components,” Mayo reports. “The big story here though is the claim that we could finally be saying goodbye to 16 GB flagship iPhones later this year.”

MacDailyNews Take: Better late than never.

Obviously, 16GB is for a certain target market, one that can live in the iCloud. The problem with that model, however, is that inexperienced buyers and inattentive resellers foist 16GB iPhones on people who really cannot manage to live in the iCloud and therefore could end up hating their iPhone (it won’t update, it’s perpetually packed full and therefore runs poorly, can’t take any photos, can’t download any more apps, etcetera).

Apple needs to ask themselves if the benefits of having a 16GB iPhone (“low” entry price and upselling platform for higher capacity iPhones) are worth the risk of disappointing those who are likely buying their first iPhone. For Apple, the quality of the user experience should always come first. — MacDailyNews, July 4, 2015

  1. From the source article:

The analyst does not address the specifics of how Apple would configure the lineup other than saying 32 GB would be the base model; this could mean Apple simply replaces 16 with 32 or goes for something more drastic. With rumors of a 256 GB storage option for iPhone 7, a 32/128/256 GB product lineup is a possibility.

YES please! 256 GB SSDs are now cheap enough that the cost structure of new iPhones should not change.

  2. About time Flash storage is so cheap there is no reason 32Gb can’t be base and Apple keep the pricing the same. Just as they did jumping 32Gb to 64Gb.
No one wants 16Gb anymore. Ok well some my mom and my aunt both have 16gb because they have only a few apps don’t take a ton of pics and will never use 4K video lol.

Either that or drop 16Gb down in price to get more customers put 32Gb in place of the $199 now. Although i didnt think anyone still did a subdized iPhone anymore.

  3. Q: Who are the people UP *dinging* this maniac troll? From the stars above I now strongly suspect we have here a diabolical loony who wastes his life inventing numerous fraudulent identities on WordPress in order to UP vote his own posts.

    That’s desperation.

    1. I agree with Mr 4 Years Ago 100% and I don’t give a rats rear what you think about it Curry.

It’s absolutely inexcusable for Apple to be selling $800 16Gb phones in 2016. Proof positive that we have a numbers guy in charge.
But it’s not just that, it’s 1000 things like that.

I’ve been coming here since the days of ‘Zune Tang’. The overwhelming consensus is that Apple’s quality has tanked since Cook took charge.
Of course it wasn’t perfect in Steve’s day, but you never got the sense that he didn’t care. His focus was on the user experience, and if that was done right then profits will follow.
That’s simply not the case anymore, and I and a great many other people are ticked off that the company we love and support is being run by a social activist bean counter.

Go ahead and give my comment one star pal. It’ll be a sad day when I start agreeing with fanboy wankers like you.

      1. Since when does it matter to me what anyone thinks of what I have to say FFS. I don’t have a starving ego that lives for your praise. Fsck your praise. Also fsck ignorance.

Take a good look at what I write and why I write it, dunderhead. It’s not for anyone’s pleasure. It’s for facts and the denigration of the denigrators.

BTW: I never go back and ‘one star’ reply comments to my comments. I do, however, hit the ‘Like’ star on the comment reply interface when I like a reply, and I obviously don’t like yours. So no ‘Like’ star for you! Does that make your bloated ‘You Must Care What I Think Of You!’ ego cringe with insecurity and whimpers? If so, seek treatment.

  4. Apple devices models should start from 64gb, preferable 128gb, they should have two models of iPhones 64gb/128gb or 128gb/256gb and they should keep increasing the memory capacities every couple of years. Even when Steve jobs was there they started of with 4gb (I think) and kept on upgrading the memory capacity. The whole 16gb thing has been dragged out too long and was easily avoidable.
