Amazon wants ‘acceptable business terms’ before releasing Prime Video app for Apple TV

“Why isn’t there a Prime Video app on the Apple TV — and why doesn’t Amazon sell either the Apple TV nor the Chromecast on Amazon.com?” Dieter Bohn reports for The Verge. “According to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, it all comes down to ‘acceptable business terms.'”

Bohn reports, “When our own Nilay Patel pressed Bezos and asked whether those terms involved Apple’s famous 30 percent cut on all purchases, Bezos said that ‘private business decisions should stay private.'”

“He nevertheless pointed out that Amazon is happy to sell other ‘competitive products'” to the Fire TV, like the Roku and the PS4,” Bohn reports. “Those devices, presumably, gave Amazon ‘acceptable business terms.'”

MacDailyNews Take: Follow the money, as always. When Apple is ready to really get serious about Apple TV, they’ll hammer out a deal with Amazon, the largest online retailer in the United States.

  1. So much for Leo Laporte’s claim that Apple has “banned” Amazon Prime from appearing on Apple TV.
He was never very good about checking his facts when it comes to negative rumors on Apple.
BTW – He didn’t report it as a rumor.

  2. Isn’t this an anti-trust issue? Jeff Brezos doesn’t like Appel, so he just boots them out his store. Isn’t that using mrarket dominance to stifle crompetition from Apple?

This could be an issue for Apple and

  3. Just sort of curious about how it is that you know that the fault for the Apple TV not being sold via Amazon is due to Tim Cook as opposed to Amazon being greedy.

Now, I don’t claim to know which is true. That being said, neither do you.

  4. Amazon wants “acceptable business terms” ??? ha ha ha ha ha

Talk to the publishers Amazon has been screwing royally all along. Ask the publishers if Amazon is giving them “acceptable business terms”. They will tell you: no.

Judges Cote and Koh and the entire 9th District Court. And people don’t understand where Trump came from? Geez, folks, open your eyes.

  5. lol I get it and don’t blame em’.

I’d be fine witth the insane 30% take if there was competition but there isn’t – you only have one option for an app store and thats it.

Its more like a captive audience than a true market place.

    1. This is much deeper than giving Apple a 30% cut – many, many other much smaller developers have no problem with it. This is about Apple not letting Amazon track and gather user data.

      1. It doesn’t make sense. Amazon can always track because you sign up for an Amazon Prime account. They know who you are when you request a video. I suspect the issue is that Apple wants a piece of anything purchased on the device, which probably cuts the profits too thin for Amazon if they have to give Apple 30 percent. Apple’s pricing makes sense to a developer that doesn’t already have the payment relationship with the consumer. But I’m not sure they add enough value to Amazon’s offering to make them worth paying 30 percent.

  6. From 9to5mac.com

“Apple takes a 30% cut of all sales made through apps on the platform, which would mean Amazon paying a commission on all paid downloads as well as on Prime subscriptions sold through the app. Amazon famously operates on razor-thin margins to maximize revenue, so a 30% commission on all sales just isn’t going to be viable.

For Apple’s part, the company would definitely not want to set a precedent by making an exception for Amazon even if it saw any reason to do so. But with both companies competing for download sales and rentals, and Apple likely to be offering its own subscription TV and video service at some point, it would have no motivation at all here to even consider a workaround.”

    1. I doubt that Apple has 30 percent mark up on the videos it sells. So a 30 percent markup for Amazon would be a no-go. And couldn’t Amazon just require the user to make the purchase on another device and just use the Apple TV app as a player?

  7. I’m more impressed with Bezos than Cook these days and I’m a long-time Apple fan. I don’t see Apple’s leading innovation and passion anymore. Bozos is passionate about innovation. He has had failures like others successful leaders….Well hell, he evan has a rocketship!
