VocalIQ acquisition hints at how Apple’s Siri plans to win the intelligent assistant war

“Apple last year acquired British intelligent assistant developer VocalIQ – a tool specifically geared to truly conversational queries – and a source who spoke to Business Insider gave some insight into just how intelligent Siri could become when infused with this tech,” Ben Lovejoy reports for 9to5Mac.

“The company tested VocalIQ against Siri, Google Now and Cortana on complex natural language queries,” Lovejoy reports. “‘For example, imagine asking a computer to ‘Find a nearby Chinese restaurant with open parking and WiFi that’s kid-friendly.’ That’d trip up most assistants, but VocalIQ could handle it. The result? VocalIQ’s success rate was over 90%, while Google Now, Siri, and Cortana were only successful about 20% of the time.'”

“While other companies like Viv and Hound have similar capabilities, those are all ‘session-based.’ That is, while you may be able to ask a series of linked questions like ‘Who designed Waterloo Bridge?’ followed by ‘What else did he design?’, that context is forgotten as soon as you ask something new,” Lovejoy reports. “Where VocalIQ differs is that it remembers context permanently.”

    1. Arrived in the mystical realm of India, at the terminus of Alexander’s world conquest, Siri contemplates its next transformation: a step increase in power and wisdom.

How about a little symbolism? The name Siri reverently encloses both Sir and Sri. Reversed it is the rainbow of insight. It may be time to take a new name; संजित the Conqueror, or मनीषा the Wise would be fitting.

        1. It was good enough for Steve Jobs, whom even the trolls cite as a formidable visionary. And check out the movie Her which has the A.I. Samantha going off with the A.I. Realisation of Alan Watts!

    3. On the nose.

Much like Siri, this is not an Apple product — it’s an acquisition with Apple branding.

They’re really out of the making-great-things biz, eh? Apple & the Yankees.

Although if you ask Apple Maps / Siri how to get to Yankee Stadium by subway…. tough.

      1. *sigh* Apple messed up with the Siri developer gang right from the start and have obviously suffered for it. I’m all for Dag Kittlaus and gang creating something FAR better than Siri for the benefit of all.

As for Apple being out of the ‘making-great-things biz’, you’re a victim of the latest barrage of anti-Apple FUD. Simple as that.

As usual, I point people to the documented Apple patents that continue to hit the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) for real indications of what Apple is doing in their R&D. Apple is by no means sitting around getting obese and stupid, unlike the numerous parasitic companies in the USA.

    1. Siri has been around a long while and has not locked down the AI world at all, in fact it lags behind, despite a head start. The Apple Watch has done nothing either. Mythical sales numbers that somehow do not seem to stack-up and a mediocre lacklustre product that has not revolutionised the watch market as was speculated is not shattering anything.

  1. similar but different. i was having apples text to speech read a web article regarding exercise and number of reps. every time speech would come to the acronym reps, it would instead say representatives. it was funny ..i guess you had to be there.

  2. Siri, what should I get my wife for our anniversary? You know how she is. Um… Siri.. Did I forget my anniversary? Am I in trouble? Did it all ready pass?
Oh shit Siri, where can I hide?

    1. Your anniversary is tomorrow. I took the liberty of sending your wife flowers, along with tickets to a romantic comedy and a sweetly worded love note. The play is tomorrow at 8 pm, so take a shower that day and wear clean clothing. Between now and then, I recommend that you smile quietly at her in passing, and give her an ear nip once or twice. Please don’t thank me; I am your humble assistant.
