Facebook begins tracking non-users around the internet

“Facebook will now display ads to web users who are not members of its social network, the company announced Thursday, in a bid to significantly expand its online ad network,” Amar Toor reports for The Verge. “As The Wall Street Journal reports, Facebook will use cookies, ‘like’ buttons, and other plug-ins embedded on third-party sites to track members and non-members alike.”

“The change is a subtle one, but it could mean Facebook will soon help to sell and place a much larger portion of the video and display ads that appear across the Internet. The change will also intensify competition with Alphabet Inc. subsidiary Google, which dominates the global digital-advertising market, and a wide range of other online ad specialists,” Jack Marshall reports for The Wall Street Journal. “‘Publishers and app developers have some users who aren’t Facebook users. We think we can do a better job powering those ads,’ said Andrew Bosworth, vice president of Facebook’s ads and business platform.”

“To date, Facebook has only showed ads across its Audience Network to Facebook users, targeted based on information the company has collected about its users’ tastes and behaviors,” Marshall reports. “Now Facebook plans to collect information about all Internet users, through ‘like’ buttons and other pieces of code present on Web pages across the Internet. It will then use the information it collects to target ads to non-Facebook users. ‘Our buttons and plugins send over basic information about users’ browsing sessions. For non-Facebook members, previously we didn’t use it. Now we’ll use it to better understand how to target those people,’ Mr. Bosworth said.”

  1. Tell me how digital stalking for profit is legal when physical stalking can earn you a jail term or restraining order?

It is one thing to place tracking cookies with the user’s consent in a browser, but that is not what is going on.
    And
Nobody is honoring the do not track me that you can select in a browser.

I have Ghostery, Purify, Click to Plugin, and a VPN (Disconnect) between me and the cookie monsters and the do not track check box selected in Safari. Also only allow cookies from sites I navigate to.
At the end of the day take a look at how many fucking cookies are in your browser if you whitelist just about anything.

    This shit needs to stop.

  2. I never have nor will I ever sign up for Facebook. I have too much distrust for the company. I shall remain vigilant in my anti-Facebook ways no matter how much advertising they send my way.

  3. “Facebook begins tracking non-users around the internet”. No, they’ve been tracking everyone for years now. Everyone of those friggin’ FB Like buttons has been phoning home your IP address and dropping cookies even if you are not a member of FB for years. They can claim they weren’t using for non-FB users, but I don’t believe that. And now that they are claiming to “start” recognize they already have years of data on you from tracking every web site you’ve visited without your permission. I fear FB and Google far more than I fear the government.

  4. On what basis do Facebook, et al have the right to track non-Facebook users around the internt and why can’t we “opt in” if we wanted to be tracked? What’s the law and who passed it?

    1. Rights and laws up and down the line are fragile in this wild west digital era we live in. Make friends with Annie Oakley, get your own hardware and learn to shoot. Get acquainted with Dale Carnegie too, his advice for getting along could save your bacon. Look out kid, don’t matter what you did, god knows when but you’re doing it again, etc.(Bob Dylan)
