“About the time Swift was going open source, representatives for three major brands — Google, Facebook and Uber — were at a meeting in London discussing the new language,” Nate Swanner reports for The Next Web. “Sources tell The Next Web that Google is considering making Swift a ‘first class’ language for Android, while Facebook and Uber are also looking to make Swift more central to their operations.”
“Google’s Android operating system currently supports Java as its first-class language, and sources say Swift is not meant to replace Java, at least initially,” Swanner reports. “While the ongoing litigation with Oracle is likely cause for concern, sources say Google considers Swift to have a broader ‘upside’ than Java.”
“Google’s onboarding for Swift would be long; it essentially has to rewrite every Android service, app and API. Google would also have to spearhead Swift support for Android — which is still only being poked and prodded at by clever developers in the Swift community,” Swanner reports. ” While it would be a big undertaking, Swift is meant for speed and safety, and Swift’s roadmap suggests it won’t be quite as difficult to use it for other platforms in the future, specifically when it comes to C++.”

MacDailyNews Take: Why not, they’ve “adopted” virtually everything else from Apple except for elegance, security, world-class industrial design, privacy, best-in-class apps, and a little thing called profits.

So they will do the same tricks MS use to do.
Adapt and Extend so there is a google modified version of Swift.
And they’ll call it “Swiped”
Like they do with everything else from Apple
You can’t steal something that’s freely given away.

Swiped as in copied
I often hate it when MDN and others brag about Apple’s “Profits”…I’m not thrilled with how much of my cash I so willingly at times happily hand over ><
I guess that you think it is better to hand over the same amount of cash for an inferior product to a barely surviving company who steal Intellectual Property while copying the look and feel of superior products?
Just another way for Gagle to make Fragmendroid more like iOS 🙄
Until Google forks Swift in a couple of years…
I’m sure that the Revolv users feel forked. And that Google will continue to fork quite a few things in future.
Those muthuh forkers are going to fork things up for everyone
It’s idiotic to spew your vitriol on Google for its interest in the Swift Language. It’s an intriguing language that will flourish only with wide spread adaptation.
And Google already knows everything about every one of you.So your stance against them is moot.
Google knows very little about me since I don’t use any of its services, block ads, and blow away cookies a couple of times a week
Paranoid? Maybe, but I don’t like being tracked, profiled, etc.
Little Swifty?
This is good for swift
The more it is adopted the better it will become
