Hyundai CEO: Cars are set to be the next smartphone

“Technology is moving rapidly from the app economy of the smartphone to automobiles — a transition for which both tech companies and automakers are rapidly preparing,” David Montalvo reports for CNBC.

“On the road, tech companies like Google and Apple are leading the charge for self-driving cars. Meanwhile, car manufacturers like Volvo are preparing their fleet for the day autonomous vehicles take the road, with sometimes unintentional results,” Montalvo reports. “Earlier this year, the Swedish company announced that it would be the first automaker to replace physical car keys with a smartphone app.”

“It’s all part of what Hyundai Motors America CEO David Zuchowski said is a ‘big transformative event’ that could eventually result in cars replacing mobile phones as smart devices,” Montalvo reports. “‘There will be alliances,’ Zuchowski said, that could turn automakers into ‘hardware makers’ for Silicon Valley. Still, when it comes to Apple, ‘I don’t see us competing with them.’ He suggested that such a partnership could allow tech companies to focus on what they already do best for consumers — creating applications that make consumers’ lives easier. ‘They want an Apple experience,’ Zuchowski said. ‘The car is the ultimate mobile device, right?'”

    1. This CEO is an absolute tool. Could not agree more with your statement. Get CarPlay out there for 2015 Sonata…!!! Now there’s a whole new line of 2016’s with CarPlay….
Plus, Hyundai has clearly demonstrated they cannot bring a product to market like Apple, have no credibility not understanding of what an Apple experience truly is.

U need to get on bored the elctrecic car train b\c the train is aboute to leave the station. Self-diving cars are tha future and Alpele knows it: that is why have invested trilions of dollers into R&B for slef-driving tech.

  1. …”tech companies like Google and Apple are leading the charge for self-driving cars.”

Montalvo writes, with a straight face, as a matter of fact, that Apple is working on self-driving car. In his statement, there is not a hint of doubt, or question.

I would like to know where and when did Apple announce this, because sure as hell I hadn’t seen the announcement anywhere.

    1. Indeed, The first Apple cars certainly won’t be self driving it may not even be a priority for years as all this self drive malarkey simply isn’t practical for a lot longer than those who frequently promote it as a given foresee. It will likely be ‘5 years from now’ for the next 20 in terms of mass market impact. It will be a slow process of intelligent capabilities being incorporated into cars over a long period so that we barely know when we no longer need to drive the car. The term should be ‘highly intelligent cars’ not self driving ones at this stage, the Google efforts are more stage managed self promotion than a complete solution in itself I suspect. An attempt to push Google technology and mindshare into the greater market.

    1. I have a blind friend who wondered whether he might be allowed to own a self driving car, but then wondered how he would ever find it again once he has parked it? I pointed out that such a car should be smart enough to find him when he arrives back in the car park.

      1. Exactly! Currently the disabled and the elderly are forced to live in areas with Public Transportation or “shuttles” or depend on family and friends to get to doctors appointments, restaurants, or shop. How amazing would it be for folks to be able to be in their homes and more self sufficient. Truly we live in an amazing time!

  2. …Cars replacing mobile phones as smart devices

WHAT?! I don’t think so. I’m NOT going to walk around the city with a CAR. Was this a bad translation, mayhap?

The car is the ultimate mobile device, right?

So we’re going to live in cars, period. Cue Gary Numan.

    Here in my car
    I feel safest of all
I can lock all my doors
It’s the only way to live in cars.
