Apple patent application reveals Magic Mouse with Force Touch

“With Force Touch so far implemented on MacBooks, the Magic Trackpad 2 and the iPhone 6s (with 3D Touch branding), it’s no surprise that Apple has plans for the Magic Mouse to get in on the act,” Ben Lovejoy reports for 9to5mac. “”

“The last update to the Magic Mouse, back in October, swapped the removeable batteries for a curiously placed Lightning-charged built-in one, and added a new pairing method – but as yet there’s no way to use Force Touch features,” Lovejoy reports. “That looks set to change as Apple highlights the missing functionality in a new patent granted today.”

“The Magic Mouse with Force Touch will be bringing the same new experience that Apple brought to the new MacBook’s Force Touch trackpad,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple. “The Force Touch based Magic Mouse is engineered to deliver a responsive, uniform click no matter where you press the surface. And underneath, force sensors detect how much pressure you’re applying and give you new ways to interact with your Mac.”

Apple's patent FIG. 1B is an exploded isometric view of the force sensing mouse; FIG. 2 is a flow chart illustrating a method for determining an amount of force applied to a force sensing input device.

“You’ll be able to use a Force click to enable new capabilities, like quickly looking up the definition of a word or previewing a file just by clicking and continuing to press on the Magic Mouse surface,” Purcher reports. “You’ll experience this through haptic feedback — a tactile vibration from the mouse that adds the sense of touch to what you see on the screen. These advanced capabilities work in addition to all the intuitive Multi-Touch gestures Mac users love.”

MacDailyNews Take: Those’ll be our next mice as our current Magic Mouse units will be ready for replacement soon!

  1. They JUST released a Magic mouse with lightning charging. One might accuse Apple of staggering new featured to maximize profit on a high-margin accessory.

One MIGHT accuse Apple of doing this.

  2. The Logitech FX Trackball — never offered in USB version for the Mac — was the absolute best input device for my wrists. It completely eliminated carpal tunnel symptoms.

Sadly, Logitech revised the physical design and went wireless. So if you have any wrist issues, we recommend the Evoluent wired trackballs today.

I never liked the feel of the Magic Mouse. I strongly prefer a touchpad to be completely separate from the mouse/trackball input. I also don’t understand the desire for more iOSification of OS X. Force touch is a bag of hurt that most software developers aren’t supporting.

  3. MacDailyNews Take: Those’ll be our next mice as our current Magic Mouse units will be ready for replacement soon!

    Why?
I’ve never seen a Magic Mouse wear out.

  4. I was never able to get my Magic Mouse to maintain its connection to the batteries. It constantly lost power, even with all of the Jerry–rigged spacer suggested online (paper sides and foil ends) to prevent the batteries from moving (apparently, an unaddressed common problem).

Besides, it is not ergonomic and can be very tiring to use… when it works. Form should follow function, not be a stolen idea from the 3rd floor of a modern art museum in a feeble attempt to be “stylish”.
