Mossberg: Understanding Apple’s iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro

“Last week, Apple introduced both a new iPhone and a new iPad. Normally, such a dual unveiling would be blockbuster news in the tech and business worlds. But, this time, it wasn’t,” Walt Mossberg writes for The Verge. “That’s because both announcements were tactical business moves, products which lack breakthrough technology, but aim to appeal to owners of older Apple models.”

“But that doesn’t mean the new iPhone and iPad are bad. In fact, I like them both. They’re just iterative: smaller, familiar vessels for Apple’s latest technology,” Mossberg writes. “I’ve been testing them, and I believe they’ll appeal to a significant minority of users when they become available tomorrow.”

“With the new iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro, Apple is trying to fill holes in its product line and encourage more upgrading,” Mossberg writes. “It reminds me of the days when the company sold a whole range of iPod models, from well under $100 to about $400, at roughly $50 intervals. The idea, then and now, was to cover the waterfront. You couldn’t go wrong with most of these iPods, and you won’t go wrong with these two latest Apple products.”

  1. I agree with Walt on these ideas. Apple’s catering to as many customers as possible.

I bought my iPhone 5 in November of 2012, and I’m still using it today. The new iPhone SE, since it can use the same cases as the 5 and 5S, I’m tempted to get one so I can have a newer phone.

  2. Walt understanding… Wow. He gets it now…

Talk about an influencial figure in our tech world.

Walt! Time to change your diaper, take your medicine and take your morning nap. You’ve got some other bullshit to write this afternoon…

  3. Lies pacify, but the truth hurts!

Apple leadership under Tim Cook is ordinary and the products are mediocre at best. Enthusiasm and excitement left the building some 5-years ago, the very second Jobs died.

Product pricing is atrocious and Cook should be ashamed for still taking 500% markups off the sale of RAM, 6-years after the iPad was first released. The new Apple is all about greed, shoddy and rushed out useless products, untested software that might as well have been written by a chimpanzee, and endless news stories of Cook’s non-job related activism and desperate measures to keep his vapid image in the public eye.

Apple leadership is lazy, non-innovative, and totally uninspiring. Cook himself is boring, distracted with social activism, an attention whore, and thoroughly incompetent to run a company like Apple correctly!

Sitting on a bench at a bus stop is more entertaining than current Apple keynotes; and nothing “just works” any longer… up to and including Cook and his motley band of run of the mill restricted stock unit chasers!

    1. It is time for your medicine and maybe, just maybe get back to your core; toying with your little boat toy.

Technology with Apple is so subtile that the commun mortal can’t follow anymore.

Leave the big boat to Apple.
