“After a week with the SE, I’ve found I really do use a smaller phone differently,” David Pierce writes for Wired. “Most noticeably, I’ve dropped this phone zero times. And my pinkie doesn’t hurt from balancing my phone on it, either.”
“Even when I’m using it, the SE’s 4-inch screen is less alluring than a bigger display, less likely to draw me so far in I forget the world around me even exists,” Pierce writes. “I’m not saying I use my phone less now; that’ll never happen. But even when I do look at the SE, simply by virtue of it taking up a smaller space in front of my eyes I’m somehow more aware of the world around me.
“I’m not going back to a small phone. Sure, it’s not as easy to hold in one hand, but my gargantuan iPhone 6s Plus is so much better for watching movies, so much more suited to reading books and long articles, so much more pleasant to type on, that I can’t give it up. The iPhone 5s, and by extension the SE, are for people for whom the smartphone is a tool, not a lifestyle,” Pierce writes. “I need a bigger phone. That said, my 6s Plus now feels comically huge. Hey Apple, can you make this thing a little smaller without making the screen smaller? You know, like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge? Big screen, small phone. Now that would be the perfect smartphone.”

Another month, and I _may_ consider the SE as my next phone. Haven’t quite decided yet. I may just go for a used 5s instead.
I won’t use it any differently than my current 4″ iPhone. 🙂
Yes, your 6+ is comically huge. And you admit it hurts your hand to hold and use.
I have better ways to watch movies and read books, thanks. My iPhone is the perfect size already.
The reason I use an addblocker is that the suppliers of adverts send too many irrelevant adverts. one search for a campsite and the next six months I get bombarded with adverts for campsites. etc…. now wired has blocked me out or pay a weekly fee. Guess I and many others will just not read them any more… say goodbye to them… Now if you and they could force google etc to not bombard us with irrelevant adverts, silly adverts, repetitive adverts, ask us what we like ourselves maybe we will change…
any site with too many adverts I just drop….
I was worried that the writer would tell me to use it to balance a wobbly chair by putting it under the short leg. Rest assured, that doesn’t work as advertised.
I’m getting my SE this Thursday. I’ve long argued for a 4 inch, or smaller, phone. I’m happy APPLE made the decision to go after that niche in the market. Why give it to anyone else? Cover all your bases.
The author of this article made a good suggestion – make the phone even smaller by following the Samsung design of taking the screen to the edge. Eliminate the sides. I’m sure you will do this.
Shrink the width and the length while keeping the current WxL proportion. It’s a good look.

I love my iPhone 6 Plus, and have used it about ten hours a day for the last year and a half. It is by far the best product I have ever owned. Switching to a smaller iPhone and an iPad came across my mind, but the 6 Plus is almost perfect for me. The iPhone 7 Plus and maybe the Apple Watch 2 will be my next devices.
My 6+ has also been a great purchase. Its replaced my iPad mini and even use of my Air to an extent. Assuming the rumors are true, I’d love to see a 5.8″ iPhone or even 6″. I have a Watch too, which I like very much, but I’m far more interested in how iPhones can replace laptops than how wearables devices can replace iPhones. I think the smartphone will be around for a long, long time.
I thought I’d use my 6+ differently than my 5s when I got it; perhaps I’d use my iPad less or something. Turns out I was wrong. I still use my iPad for all mobile computing, reading, movies, etc. My 6+ is still just a phone and a music player for me. And I never get phone calls.
6+ & Apple Watch is a hard combo to beat.
How many years have we been looking for and expecting an edge to edge of simply less overhang top and bottom? Not only have they not pioneered this as we had hoped but for the past 18 months or more they have had to watch competitors do it first. A year ago I was shocked no change was evident in this regard and to be honest I have little expectation it will improve come September. It’s almost line Apple is becoming the classic company appealing to those who like the traditional rather than the innovation we have come to expect over the years and yet expect to retain their appeal and price point. This attitude concerns me. The SE is one thing but it seems to be indicative these days and if it continues down this road with increadingly safe, unimaginative, lacklustre updates all round we can perhaps expect the Apple car to be styled like a Morgan.
