Apple’s iPhone SE is bringing new consumers to iOS ecosystem

“Early data from Slice Intelligence indicates that the SE may help Apple grow its maturing iPhone consumer base,” Jaimee Minney reports for Slice Intelligence.

“Only 35 percent of iPhone SE buyers purchased an iPhone online in the past two years, and 16 percent of them were previously Android users,” Minney reports. “By comparison, 49 percent of iPhone 6S buyers upgraded from a previous iPhone, and 10 percent replaced an Android device they bought online within the past two years.”

“Buyers of the SE look much different than the Apple fanboy audience typically queuing up to buy the latest from Cupertino. They’re older, less educated, and surprisingly, more male,” Minney reports. “More than one fifth of SE buyers are in the 45-54 age demographic, versus 18 percent for all iPhone buyers; and 77 percent of SE buyers are men, versus 69 percent.”

“Data on SE owners’ education offers a further indication that the SE is bringing a new audience to iPhone,” Minney reports. “Only 39 percent of new SE owners have a college degree, whereas 46 percent of those who pre-ordered an iPhone 6 or 6S did. And while education and income typically correlate closely, there were not sizable differences in income between SE buyers and those of other iPhones, though iPhone SE buyers under-index somewhat among the highest wage earners.”

MacDailyNews Take: iPhone SE is obviously a much smarter tack than iPhone 5c. Better price, better materials, better technology, and better features means better sales.

  1. This report doesn’t make sense. As of Sunday there were 3.4 million SE orders with the three largest Chinese online retailers. If the orders are 6% of the 6s preorders then this means there must of been 57 million 6s iPhones ordered in the first weekend by just the Chinese. It wasn’t even close to that.

It’s possible this report only covers North America or the U.S., and if it does, can the North American number be off my that much? It seems like the Chinese number is 50-100% of the 6s opening sales. How can the U.S. number be only 6%? If it was only 6% then only around 100-300 thousand SE phones were preordered in the U.S., which doesn’t seem correct.

  2. The fact that male purchasers of the SE are in the 70 percent range says that the “pocketableness” of the SE is still most important issue. Women have purses and don’t have to worry about it as much. I hope this will offset the summer sales lag for folks waiting on the next September iPhone. Android users have one less argument about how they get upgrade options twice a year.
