“Google has been developing a third-party keyboard for iOS that would put the company’s search engine in a highly used part of the interface, The Verge has learned,” Casey Newton reports for The Verge. “The keyboard, which incorporates a variety of search options, has been in development for months, according to people familiar with the matter.”
“Like its Android counterpart, the Google keyboard for iOS employs gesture-based typing, so you can slide your finger from one letter to the next and let Google guess your intended word,” Newton reports. “Tap the Google logo and you can access traditional web search. It also appears to have distinct buttons for pictures and GIF searches, both presumably powered by Google image search.”
“It remains to be seen whether iOS users have an appetite for Google’s approach to typing,” Newton reports. “Third-party keyboards have generally been a disappointment on iPhones and iPads.”

And Apple can’t boot Google from its perch as iOS’ default search engine quickly enough.
It’s so Google can record everything you do on the device.
That’s exactly what I was thinking

In part because they’re unstable (whether due to the app or iOS, hard to say), and can’t access the Siri-dictation button without switching back to the default keyboard.
I don’t really want to use a 3rd part keyboard, but Apple still doesn’t provide a swipe-type option with their default one.
