Beleaguered Samsung to debut knockoff of Apple’s phone upgrade program in South Korea

“Samsung Electronics Co Ltd on Wednesday said it will launch a phone upgrade programme in South Korea this week that will allow subscribers to switch to a new premium handset every 12 months,” Se Young Lee reports for Reuters.

MacDailyNews Take: Premium? Samsung is going to allow users to upgrade to iPhones?

“Some analysts have said such schemes will be necessary for Samsung and other phone makers to counter slowing global market growth by coaxing consumers to replace their handsets more quickly,” Lee reports. “Rival Apple Inc launched a similar programme in the United States last year.”

  1. Apple’s plan is very enticing. Samsung – not so much.

When we get out new phones, probably with the iPhone7, we will sign up on the plan. We will have to see if we go for a one year replacement (and restart the payment plan) or wait out the full 2 years (so we can sell off the phone).
The main feature I like in the program is that the phone is unlocked. Now when I travel overseas I can switch out the SIM card and use local rates and data.
