“Let’s hear it for the Mac,” Dan Moren writes for Macworld. “There’s been plenty of ink shed on the meaning and impact of iPhone and iPad sales in Apple’s most recent quarters… But through it all, the Mac has quietly kept on doing steady business, and I think the sturdy workhorse of Apple’s lineup deserves some accolades.”
“Not only has the Mac entered its fourth decade—impressive for any piece of technology—but it’s seen tremendous success and even growth in an era where all anybody can talk about is smartphone this and tablet that,” Moren writes. “The Mac’s success is especially heartening for someone like me, who grew up in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, when the platform was a target for jeers and the company seemed to perpetually appear with that good old ‘beleaguered’ adjective in every news story.”
Moren writes, “Twenty-some years later, and the worm has certainly turned.”

The Mac is the not quite just a truck, more like a high end SUV.
Apple needs to spend more time on it’s software and interface, but … well …. it’s hanging it.
Faster, faster, faster machines! If Apple has to dump Intel, build its on processor for the Mac, Okay we are ready to change again. The new baseline Mac should Triple the performance of the fastest machines. Render a 4K movie, 2 hours worth of video, in 2 seconds. Let’s rock!
IF Apple were to dump Intel (and I’m hearing in the grapevine an accelerating interest in doing so), there would have to be another Mac OS shift. Presumably the shift would be back to RISC CPUs. Time for OS XI?
[No, I’m not going to explain yet again why CISC software can’t generally run on RISC chips. Go DIY the research.]
I will dump Apple when Apple dumps Intel.

Use mac since mac plus… Outcast. But yet managed dept buying thousands of pc’s. My desktop was a MAC.

Apple deoeswnt care about the Mac except as a lingering cash cow.
The move to Intel architecture was supposed to be a bellwether moment.
Instead, we got overpriced, non-upgradable all in ones, laptops that cater to form over function and the trash can Mac.
Yet, you can build a Hackintosh at every service level Apple offers for less money, more expandability and way cheaper pricing than Cupertino cares to give.
If you havent tried a hackintosh, they’re very easy to build. You will finally get the machine that Apple refuses to sell you.
Growing cash cow!
And break the OS X agreement. Okay, give that a try.
Why would anyone ever want a Hackintosh. The OS is terrible!

I don’t care what kind of fancy tablets or phones get produced. There will always be a soft spot in my heart for good old workhorse general purpose computers and the Mac is one of the best ever made period.
I just helped a client install El Capitan. I asked her how old her iMac was and she said probably about 7 or 8 years old. Try to put Windows 10 on a computer that old. I told her that if she had Windows, she probably would have had to buy 1 or 2 computers since then and pay for AV software and probably for me to remove malware a few times.
Windows 10 is a free upgrade from anything running Windows 7.
I’ve installed it on more than a few 7 and 8 year old computers.
I use a Mac because while I know how to rebuild a PC, a linux box, and a beowulf cluster. I got work to do that has nothing to do with that and I do not need my time wasted by non-reliable stuff.
A guy I work with had his old HP crap out, and he came to me knowing I’m a big Apple fan and asked about a Mac. I showed him the iMacs on Apple’s site and he freaked. No way he was gonna spend that kind of money.
So over the weekend he and his wife and son went to Best Buy to check out the PCs. The HP they were considering was out of stock, so they held off. After much deliberation they went back and spent $1,200 on the iMac that impressed them so much.
They were amazed how quick and easy it was to set up, and since they all three have iPhones they are all set. Hooray for the good guys!
Just bought a new 27″ iMac and I’m very impressed. No heat whatsoever when I re-encode video. And for the record there’s no way I’d use my iPad Air for that type of work. The iMac is a real “grunty” workhorse.
Likewise my eight and a half year old is iMac is still going fine and will be relegated to word processing (and related) work.
