Alphabet shuts down Google Glass social media accounts

“Four years after unveiling its wearable glass headset, Alphabet Inc’s Google shut down several social media accounts linked to the Glass gadget, ending its push to popularize the pricey eyeglasses with consumers,” Anjali Athavaley reports for Reuters.

“On Tuesday, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts for Google Glass were no longer active, a development first reported on the website 9to5Google,” Athavaley reports. “The company declined to comment on the decision.”

“Glass was greeted with enthusiasm among tech aficionados when it was first unveiled in 2012,” Athavaley reports. “But the device, which allows users to access e-mail messages on its eye-level screen and to record video with a tiny camera, quickly ran into problems.”

“Some mocked its awkward appearance, while others expressed concern it could be used to make video recordings surreptitiously,” Athavaley reports. “On Twitter, many interpreted the disappearance of Glass’s social accounts on Tuesday to mean a final end to efforts to market the product to consumers.”

Maybe, instead of posting the largest quarterly profit ever recorded by a single public corporation, Apple should blow a couple billion by launching a bunch of over-hyped, pie-in-the-sky garbage projects? Clueless investors would line up in droves like they do for Google Alphabet.

  1. I never understood why they didn’t just make this an eyeglass product. I’d pay $1,000 for digital eyeglasses that could be updated to my current prescription when needed. It’s also be cool to zoom my vision like the bionic man. There are so many applications for this, why the lack of vision?

    ISN’T THAT THE TRUTH……

  3. I tried a pair of Google Glasses on once and thought the display was for sh*t. Garbage tech with anti-social repercussions. Brandishing your cluelessness in such a Borgian way said a lot about those who wore these and invented them. I hope Apple never pursues this kind of tech.
