Apple generated more iPhone revenue in one quarter than Android has in its entire existence

“Android has generated $31 billion in revenue since Google acquired the mobile operating system in 2005, a lawyer for Oracle said in federal court amid an ongoing suit between the two tech giants,” Alice Truong reports for Quartz.

“Annette Hurst, an Oracle lawyer, said Jan. 14 that Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has made $22 billion in profit off of Android, reports Bloomberg,” Truong reports. “The revelation is a rare glimpse into Android’s financials, which Google has long guarded along with the details of other divisions, such as YouTube. Oracle did not reveal how it calculated those figures.”

“If the numbers are accurate, that would mean Android has generated less revenue over its lifetime than the iPhone did in the quarter ended Sep. 30, the most recently reported quarter,” Truong reports. “Then, Apple said the iPhone generated $32.2 billion in sales.”

MacDailyNews Take: And, fiscal Q4 (calendar Q3) is traditionally one of Apple’s weakest iPhone quarters, no less, since it occurs just ahead of annual model upgrades.

  1. .. but, splutter splutter, Android is on most mobile phones, chortles every analyst, upgrade Google and downgrade Apple Inc.!!

This ‘market share’ nonsense is going to go down as the biggest economic laugh in history!

  2. I doubt that $31 billion includes all the money Alphabet (nee, Google) makes off the data mining of all the Android user’s personal data to be sold to advertisers and the rest. It would be nearly impossible to accurately calculate that number. I’d be shocked if the real number is not at least 20x that $31 billion.

  3. China and India have quadruple and more than double the populations of the United States, yet Americans still think we are the greatest country on the planet. Why can’t Analysts understand Apple is like ‘MURICA?

    1. Apple is like America because it is quality, and it may be expensive, but it is worth it. Apple and America have so many haters because they are jealous. Android is…well…like those countries in Europe. It may collectively have more people than the US but quality is always over quantity. And they always have that “more is better” attitude. I’m sticking with BOTH Apple and America.

  4. So Google makes around $2-$3 per Android phone in the West and probably $0.50 a year in developing countries. That’s pathetic. Even crap for content Netflix is generating $100+ a year per account. No wonder why Android is such an infested and fragmented mess. Google probably wants a large number of Android users to migrate to the iPhone because more revenue is generated from iPhone and because more iPhones in the marketplace means less focus on “monopoly” issues.
