Apple iPhone to take share as smartphone growth slows

“Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty today writes that smartphone sales are set to be weaker next year than even her reduced expectations, though she sees upside for Apple (AAPL) taking share with the iPhone,” Tiernan Ray reports for Barron’s.

We now look for 11% growth in 2015 (up 8% Y/Y in 4Q, implying in-line seasonality of 14% Q/Q) compared to our original forecast of 18% at the beginning of the year, and 12% in our most recently published model… We model iPhone units growing in-line with the overall industry, baking in share gains in the high-end segment. High end smartphones ($300+) have been growing slower than the overall market… Chinese users shifting to better smartphones and more US users planning to upgrade this year than last year. As a result, we expect Apple to take share in its two largest countries in 2016 despite materially lower expectations for overall smartphone unit growth. — Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty

  1. Note to analysts: It is not Apple’s prices that are high. It is competitor quality that cannot compare.

“Find out what they like. And how they like it. And give it to ’em just that way.” Fats Waller. Ain’t Misbehavin’

    1. ” It is competitor quality that cannot compare.” So totally true. I still have several iPhone 3Gs units that still work fine, in fact they work better than most of the cheap android throw away phones.

  2. The only thing Wall Street saw in this article was:
“smartphone sales are set to be weaker next year than even her reduced expectations”

Again, Apple is doomed or something.

  3. WTF?…”We now look for 11% growth in 2015 (up 8% Y/Y in 4Q, implying in-line seasonality of 14% Q/Q) compared to our original forecast of 18% at the beginning of the year, and 12% in our most recently published model… We model iPhone units growing in-line with the overall industry, baking in share gains in the high-end segment. Can’t she come out and say what she means? I can read the Sanskrit but does she need to use so many words to say what is fairly evident?
This is Katy Hubert, once known as the absolute worst predictor of AAPL performance.

      1. Dense, actually Katy is pretty much rambling in her words, mostly so if Apple falters, she can say… “You just mis-understood me”! LOL
Most of the bloggers do this as they try to put down Apple, so they can say, no, I said something else, when they are proven wrong. LOL

  4. Android has done its job superbly!

Following the iPhone introduction in 2007, Android has paved the way for the masses to get used to the ‘Smart Phone in the Rough’, with no security including plenty of spam & plenty of hacks, no OS upgrades, plenty of OEM layering of useless apps that can’t be deleted & cute OS names that allow network purveyors of these phones to entice users to a new phone with cute names such as ‘upgrade to Android lollipop with a new Samsung Galaxy’

Now its time for the real deal; user either walks into an Apple Store after throwing their Android phone in the garbage & purchases an iPhone 6s/6s Plus or tells the Network shop selling phones to ‘stuff the Android lollipop where the sun don’t shine & give me an iPhone’

    Again, great job Android, thanks!!
