Is Apple preparing to take $8 billion from Google?

“It’s probably fair to say the relationship between Apple and Google/Alphabet remains in the soup, even though iOS devices account for an estimated 75 percent of the search giant’s mobile search revenue,” Jonny Evans writes for Computerworld.

“Now it seems Apple may hit Google with an $8 billion charge on its profits, with the analysts at CCS Insight predicting the company will replace Google search with Bing as the default search engine on Apple products, by the end of 2017,” Evans writes. “We’ve anticipated such a move for time, of course.”

“Apple has already made it easy to use a range of different search engines, including the excellent Duck Duck Go on its products,” Evans writes. “And there’s no way Apple can easily reconcile the billions of dollars Google makes from feeding ads to iOS devices.”

    1. Try “ixquick.com”, just as good as DDFG but with a more concise set of relevant searches. I find the first one or two are spot on, and you don’t need to trawl through pages and pages of irrelevant searches as with DDG and Google. Have been using it for years, and just as private as DDG.

    2. Not happy that with what’s true per my experience, but G is still the best s-engine. I’ve tried all mentioned, b/c I’d like to dump G…and will when a satisfying option emerges. Apple partnering with Bing makes me believe it won’t be long, but linking to MS is better? Seeing Apple have a “real” s-engine would be ideal, but at this point, Spotlight makes me think it’ll be quite awhile.

    3. Duck Duck Go with occasional use of their (very cool) “bangs” feature so that the search goes to Google, WikiP, YouTube, etc. without changing default search engines or having to go to one of those sites to search…

  1. DDG first,
. . . but about 25% of the time, I have to go to google to find what I need. DDG is OK but not quite there yet for me. Still, it is much better than it was at the beginning.

I certainly am not a googleite and their shenanigans, but for the same reasons I like Apple products, “it just works” – google does this when I am looking for something obscure.

    1. Fair assessment. I generally only have to go to Gaggle when I’m looking for a range of images I don’t find on DDG first. So DDG works for me 99% of the time when not looking for that odd image; then it is still good about 75% of the time for me.

I’ve tried Bing. It seems to mirror DDG (or the other way around) on image searches, so that doesn’t help me avoid the G site.

    2. You probably already know this, but in DDG use !g then search term for google search and !gi then search term for google image search – these will give you private searches. There are a lot more of these, but those are the ones I use the most. DDG rules, I will never go back…

  2. I certainly do not want to exchange one morally corrupt bunch of information grabbers with a new lot of presently neutered one. DDG really ought to be beefed up directly or through collaboration so that within a few years it can be the default option. Its not like Apple is short of the money to do so.

  3. I agree with spyintheskyuk. DDG is nowhere near as powerful as Google at present. In areas that I have some knowledge about what ought to appear when I perform a search, DDG often comes up short, requiring me to resort to go back to Google.

    Sigh!

  4. DDG here too.

For those not living in the US, it’s important to set DDG to your country, which is done in it’s settings menu, otherwise when doing things like looking for stuff to buy, the results will predominately be US based. Telling DDG which country you’re in makes a hell of a lot of difference – I just wish that somebody had told me about doing that several years ago.

  5. Just my two cents…best strategic move would be to purchase DuckDuckGo and change the name and not release it until it is right. Should have safe and easy parental controls. It would give instant leverage and have all the search engines sweating bigtime. If they don’t buy them, then someone else will. Call it the new Spotlight…full blown search across the web(including iCloud) or just your iOS device.
