Apple considering OLED displays for iPhone 7/Plus

“According to a report from Korean ET News (via DigiTimes), Apple has recently added Samsung Display to its Apple Watch supply chain,” Ashraf Eassa writes for The Motley Fool. “Additionally, the report claims that Samsung is currently sampling Apple with OLED displays for use in a next-generation iPhone.”

“The report claims that Apple will make a decision in November as to whether it will incorporate OLEDs into its next-generation iPhone or if it will ultimately end up using LCDs,” Eassa writes. “Apple CEO Tim Cook said back in 2013 that OLED displays were ‘awful.’ In particular, his beef with such displays at the time was that the color saturation was poor. Since then, top-tier OLED displays have actually seen major advances in image quality and color accuracy… Additionally, DigiTimes recently reported that one of the concerns Apple has with respect to OLEDs is the lifespan of such displays. Unless a potential supplier can offer Apple OLEDs with similar lifespans to LCD alternatives, then OLED-based iPhone 7/7 Plus devices may be a no-go this round.”

“OLEDs also offer a number of advantages over LCDs, including perfect black levels (which implies an infinite contrast ratio) and the lack of need for a backlight, which can help enable thinner devices,” Eassa writes. “In my view, moving to an OLED display for the iPhone 7/7 Plus could help enable a major boost in display quality from the iPhone 6s/6s Plus.”

MacDailyNews Take: Our Apple Watches’ OLED displays certainly do look gorgeous. If Apple can be assured of the quality level and lifespan they require for iPhone, we could see them making the move to OLED for iPhones, too.

    1. You are right, good OLEDs nowawadays are not awful at all (e.g. Apple-designed and patened OLED in Apple Watch).

However, their colours are not any more beatiful than best IPS LCD colours, and their efficiency is so bad that Apple Watch was the only device Apple could use it since GUI has black background (in all other cases OLED consumers as much or more than IPS LCD).

So I am not sure at all that there is sense to move iPhone to OLED. Apple is not going to turn iOS GUI into black one, not feasible.

By the way, OLED also does not have “true blacks” in any case except for darkness, so actual contrast ratio of those displays are not really better than that of IPS LCD. The reason is that display and cover glass reflect much more light than leaks from IPS LCD background, making the latter negligible in comparison. This means that the fact that OLED does not emit light when black is irrelevant in every situation except when you look at screen in the darkness, which is (almost) never.

  1. I have used OLED phones over the past few years.
Originally the color saturation was very bad. Oranges looked red, etc.
The OLED screen on the S6 is very nice, the color balance is better.
I have no doubt that Apple has been and will continue to look at all emerging technologies and will choose to use them when the technology offers advantages over older technologies.

    1. What are you trying to be, reasonable?

Also, love the skew in the headline. Should that maybe say “considered” instead of “considering “? The author dismisses the idea by the end of the second paragraph above, or at least, as he says, “may be a no-go”.

Let’s face it, Apple needs to change all their displays to OLED, and they need to do it yesterday or they’re doomed. It’s obvious. Tim Cook knows this, he’s just too busy being gay and saying gay stuff to really know how to fix all the problems at Apple, like paying Chinese kids 17 cents an hour to make $20,000 Apple watches. Oh, and they need, need, I say, to make a low cost iPhone like $49 so they can keep selling iPhones cause… Market share! Besides, then I could finally afford one and trash this craptastic Android I bought second-hand.

There, I think I have successfully restored the balance of reason this forum lives by.

      Cheers, you reasonable bastard,
