Apple’s iPhone juggernaut continues with record-breaking sales while Android peddlers fight over scraps

“Estimates claim that Android owns from just over 50 percent to nearly 80 percent of the mobile device market, but Apple is winning where it counts—money,” Tony Bradley writes for Forbes. “According to data released by Apple it seems the iPhone money train is still steaming along nicely with a record-breaking 13 million iPhone 6S and iPhones 6S Plus units sold in just the opening weekend.”

“The iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus are really just getting started. On October 9 the devices will become available in 40 additional markets, including Italy, Mexico, Russia, and Spain,” Bradley writes. “Apple says the new smartphones will be available in more than 130 countries by the end of the year, which means the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus sales figures will just keep climbing.”

“As a whole, Android will sell far more devices. The vast majority of those devices are typically Galaxy devices — which Samsung sells in massive volume. Despite outselling Apple significantly in terms of volume, though, Samsung makes a fraction of the profit that Apple does,” Bradley writes. “Apple is making an estimated 92 percent of the profit in the mobile industry, followed by Samsung at a distant second with 15 percent. It adds up to more than 100 percent because the rest of the Android and other mobile device makers actually lose money according to IDC… Winning in market share is a hollow victory.”

  1. Android is not a phone. It is a platform. iOS is a platform. The comparison of iOS devices (phones, tablets, watches (watch OS is a subset iOS), Apple TV, iPod Touches is a fairer comparison to Android. iPhone’s 6s, 6s Plus, 6, 6 Plus and 5s are current models of phones. Comparing models sold, market share per model and profit share per model makes more sense.

  2. The way I see it for my work is that the desktop Apple runs the heavy apps, Windows, etc.

MacBook Pro lets me run outside the work desk. iPad Pro lets me sketch anywhere, iPhone does, comm and Apple Watch alerts me. That means I pick the right device for efficiency.

I can’t see that level of integration anywhere else and certainly not at Samsung.

It is all about efficiency for me and a lot of people I know. If your devices slow you down, you have to work harder, or you pick less challenging work.

    1. Wall Street prefers volume over profits. There is always the belief that eventually with high market share will come profits. It is belief that fuels Wall Street and damns Apple to doom. Wall Street believes Amazon’s business model of selling $50 tablets will loosen Apple’s grip on the tablet industry. Amazon will be expected to sell at least 20 tablets to every one iPad Pro. I really am curious to see the results of Amazon’s business model, but we’ll never know because Bezos never discloses any sales numbers.
