“Fewer and fewer people are buying PCs, unless they are made by Apple, latest industry data show,” Arjun Kharpal reports for CNBC.
“Global PC shipments plunged to a worse-than-expected 66.1 million units in the second quarter of 2015, marking an 11.8 percent year-on-year decline, according to a report by IDC,” Kharpal reports. “But Apple was the only company to buck the trend and posted a 16.1 percent rise year-on-year rise in PC shipments.”
“Apple launched a new Macbook earlier this year which it dubbed the ‘thinnest, lightest and most beautiful’ notebook it has ever made,” Kharpal reports. “This was one of the reasons why the Cupertino, CA giant managed to increase shipments, despite the overall market decreasing.”

Don’t forget that Macs are counted on both sides of this equation. Increased sales of Macs count towards the sales of PCs in general, so if you wanted to compare Mac sales to Windows PC sales, the drop in Windows PC sales becomes even bigger if the Macs are taken out of that figure.
To be precise: Macs grew 16.1% while all other PCs shrank 13.6%.
The non-Mac PC sales decline is 15% worse — a decrease of 13.6%, not 11.8% — than the figure cited by IDC, since the “total PC” number includes the mitigating effect of Mac growth.
IDC does that to prop up the appearance of Windows because they are corrupt and PC vendors are their clients. They do not give objective information.

Again, it’s much worse than the figures IDC reported. Back out the servers, back out the Slates (fake iPads), back out the phablet or phones they count as PC’s, then maybe we can start comparing Apples to Apples.

I remind everyone that these are wild-assed guesses. . . IDC has no clue about Apple’s sales. The usually miss by a wide margin.
Apple needs to revive a tower Mac — even if it is a mini-tower. I’m sure that the Mac Pro isn’t driving these increases.
I will admit I prefer the versatility of a tower over the smallness of a black doughnut or trash can. They should offer both.
Isn’t this like saying “fewer and fewer people are buying smartphones, unless they are made by Apple”? It seems the Mac is starting to follow the iPhone as the only computer to buy.

Let’s be fair. Windows 10 is about to hatch. People are waiting to upgrade their older Vista and XP running hardware until Windows 10 pops out of the shell. Apple deals with the same phenomenon when new and nifty stuff is pending.
(Win 10 is free only to Win 7 and 8.x owners. It’s unofficially free to Win 10 Technical Preview users as well).
There’s really going to be a flood of PC sales for Win 10? I’m thinking no.
Judging from the enthusiasm of the local PC user group, where I’ve given two presentations about Windows 10, I’d agree with you. At least, it’s going to be a bit of a yawner at first. The beta (Technology Preview) of Win 10 remains flaky and not-ready-for-prime-time.
Ergo, which means that Win10 final is also not ready for prime time!

I thought about the new MacBook, but two problems: Firstly, you need two fingers to open it, one on each hand, all other Mac laptops (unibody designs onwards) needed one finger of one hand to open.
Secondly, no illuminated Apple logo on the lid.
I opted for the 11.6″ MacBook Air instead and I absolutely love it. It’s a great little machine 🙂
