Premature Apple Watch prognostications and other such nonsense

“On February 27, 2015, Brian X. Chen penned an article entitled: ‘Apple’s New Job: Selling a Smartwatch to an Uninterested Public,’ and on March 2, 2015, Mark Wilson published ‘You Guys Realize The Apple Watch Is Going To Flop, Right?‘” John Kirk writes for Tech.pinions.

“Saying consumers are not excited about the idea of wearing computers on their bodies is like saying horse owners, prior to the introduction of the Ford Model-T, were not very excited about being seen in horseless carriages,” Kirk writes. “Mister Chen has it backwards. People are not excited about wearables because today’s wearables are not exciting. Trust me, when wearables become useful — similar to when cars became useful — customers will be plenty excited about the category.”

“I think, with Apple’s track record, they deserve the benefit of the doubt. But that doesn’t mean that I KNOW the Apple Watch is going to do well. Because I just don’t know,” Kirk writes. “And I’m willing to wait and see how it plays out before jumping to any premature conclusions. But the one thing I am not willing to do is to sit here and listen to a lot of nonsensical guff as to why it won’t work out.”

Tons more in the full article – very highly recommended – here.

MacDailyNews Take: Along with all of the other things Kirk has written so well is this (his are partially in footnotes, so we’re highlighting them here): “Valuing features over the user experience is the second biggest mistake in consumer market analysis. Valuing price over user experience is the first most consistent mistake.”

    1. If you go back in time, you’ll find that tech analysts were pretty negative about the introduction of the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad. This is routine, par for the course.

    2. Trolldude, there is a REASON why so many people ‘flame’ you. Get back under your bridge and think about it for a while and tell me why when you come up with an answer.

  1. Simple math says Apple Watch will be a success, not only long-term, but during its first quarter of sales. As an early success story, it far will surpass iPhone and iPad.

Apple Watch is the ultimate example of what Apple does so well. Build on previous success. Apple Watch builds on the success of iPhone, just as iPhone’s success is accelerating upward. In just one quarter (the last completed quarter), Apple sold almost 75 million iPhones. This quarter, Apple will sell at least another 50 million. All of those iPhones are compatible with Apple Watch. In fact, all iPhones going back to iPhone 5 (more than two years of accumulated iPhone sales) are compatible with Apple Watch. If 9 out of 10 those friendly existing Apple customers reject Apple Watch, you may think that’s a failure. But if the remaining 1 out of 10 wants one as soon as it’s available, Apple sells (or has a waiting list for) more than 20 million Apple Watches by the end of June.

During the rest of the calendar year, there will be three more quarters of iPhone says, including one with the next iPhone release (and the holiday shopping season). Who thinks Apple ends the year with ONLY 1 out of 10 iPhone customers wanting an Apple Watch?

  2. Standing Idiots

“If there are any idiots in the room, will they please stand up ” said the sarcastic teacher. After a long silence, one freshman rose to his feet.”Now then mister, why do you consider yourself an idiot? ” enquired the teacher with a sneer.”Well, actually I don’t,” said the student, “but I hate to see you standing up there all by yourself. “. 😀

  3. Tired of the naysayers. When was the last time Apple failed at something – the Mac Cube? And how long ago was that? This may not be a brand new category of device, but Apple will decimate any company that has attempted wearable tech before it. Frankly I already picked out my Apple Watch and will be ordering it on the 10th – along with millions of others.

  4. Let’s say Apple only sells 1M AppleWatches for the remaining year. We’ll never know, but I’d bet that even .01% will be the Edition. Celebrities LOVE Apple! And can certainly dismiss the $10k+ price. Wait for it… Wait for it
