Leonard Nimoy, ‘Spock’ of ‘Star Trek,’ dead at 83

“Leonard Nimoy, the sonorous, gaunt-faced actor who won a worshipful global following as Mr. Spock, the resolutely logical human-alien first officer of the Starship Enterprise in the television and movie juggernaut ‘Star Trek,’ died on Friday morning at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles,” Virginia Heffernan reports for The New York Times. “He was 83.”

“His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,” Heffernan reports. “Mr. Nimoy announced that he had the disease last year, attributing it to years of smoking, a habit he had given up three decades earlier. He had been hospitalized earlier in the week.”

“His religious upbringing also influenced the characterization of Spock. The character’s split-fingered salute, he often explained, had been his idea: He based it on the kohanic blessing, a manual approximation of the Hebrew letter shin, which is the first letter in Shaddai, one of the Hebrew names for God,” Heffernan reports. “‘To this day, I sense Vulcan speech patterns, Vulcan social attitudes and even Vulcan patterns of logic and emotional suppression in my behavior,’ Mr. Nimoy wrote years after the original series ended. But that wasn’t such a bad thing, he discovered. ‘Given the choice,” he wrote, “if I had to be someone else, I would be Spock.'”

    1. Crabapple says:- Leonard Nimoy aka Mr Spock, will never die as long as he lives in our hearts.
His memory will never fade from our consciousness as long as he lives on celluloid film and in digital bits & bytes.

He has joined the pantheon of legends comprising of people like Steve Jobs, Isaac Newton, Lady Lovelace, Albert Einstein , Leonardo Da Vinci, Shaka the Zulu, Genghis Khan and many many more!!!

      1. As cool as STAR WARS was, STAR TREK was far more valuable to the culture and as someone put “a great business plan”. Thank goodness Nimoy was born, and Roddenberry looked at him and said “he’d make the greatest looking Vulcan ever!”

Thanks Leonard, you lived long and prospered, and so did we all because of your contributions.

        Leonard’s final goodbye Tweet:
A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP

      1. No matter the preference, Treckie (not Trekker) was the original label for enthusiasts. Trekker became the later PC designation. I’ve personally remained a treckie.

Having said all that, this is indeed a sad day. It is a loss for us all. I admit to being pleased (so far) that no one has yet had the audacity to suggest this is not somehow Mac/Apple related. Star Trek has positively affected us all, even those three who have never seen it.

  1. Star Trek was the inspiration for a great many people. I’ve read that Spock was the most admired character.

Leonard Nimoy is and always shall be a bright spot of our humanity.

    1. They had “Siri” before Siri was Siri…

      Spock: “Computer:”

“Where can I find some good Romulan Ale to get Lt. Uhura smashed so I can satisfy my ‘pon farr’?!?”

computer; “I have found 7 ABC stores. 3 of which are fairly close to you.”

        1. “Working…” Never once did I say ‘working’. I said they “had”! Haven’y you ever watched the movie “Spaceballs”?!? If you had, then you’d know that “even in the future, nothing works!”

        1. And Samsung! Don’t forget Samsung and their viciferous use of the “Replicator”!

I know ‘Replicator’ was a Star Trek TNG series, BUT it was derived from the “Food Synthesizer” found from the original Star Trek series… or so Wikipedia tells me so.

    2. You have to ask that question considering the influence of Star Trek on engineers and creating devices seen on the show, only for real? The stuff of tech dreams is in Star Trek.

It influenced Steve Jobs too as he said once about the 4th Gen iPhone “I grew up here in the US with The Jetsons and Star Trek and communicators, dreaming about video calling, and it’s real now!”

  2. I am very sorry to learn of Leonard Nimoy’s death. Deepest condolences to his family, friends, and to all of his fans.

I wil be In Search Of some peace regarding this sad news.

May you live long and prosper.

  3. You don’t need “Deck The Halls” or “Jingle Bell Rock”
‘Cause you can spin a dreidel with Captain Kirk and Mr.Spock- both Jewish
