“Following a pilot production at the end of 2014, Apple’s new 12-inch MacBook Air is expected to enter mass production in the first quarter of 2015, according to sources from the upstream supply chain,” Aaron Lee and Joseph Tsai report for DigiTimes.
“Apple’s new MacBook Air features Intel’s Broadwell processors and a new chassis design to reduce the device’s overall thickness and weight, but the start of mass production has been hampered by low yield rates, the sources said,” Lee and Tsai report. “As the yield issue is gradually being resolved, mass production is expected to come in the first quarter of 2015, the sources explained.”
Lee and Tsai report, “The new 12-inch MacBook Air will target mainly the high-end market segment and therefore will only have limited shipments, but the product will allow Apple to stay firmly as the leader in the ultra-thin notebook sector in terms of technology, the sources said.”

I doubt very much the MacBook Air will have an A9. I’m guessing the A9 will likely be used for the larger tablet or some yet announced product that’s some hybrid laptop/tablet product.
Every quarter Apple pays billions of dollars for high-margin Intel chips they increasingly have the capability to match themselves. It is only a matter of time before Apple adds cores and clock ticks to their ARM processors and begins their march into Macs.
Only Apple knows when that will happen, but it seems likely that power efficient MacBook Air’s would be the place to start.
Not so sure about a gold finish, but a satin-charcoal version would be rather tasty.

“Low yield rates” is always a favourite of mine.
There’s room for a 12 inch screen in the space of the current 11 inch form-factor due to a greater than 1/2 inch bezel around it.
Factor in a performance at least as good as the current base i5 and they’ll have a winner that’ll make me want to upgrade from my 2011 13 MBA.
