GlobalFoundries could stamp out Apple A9 processors in upstate New York

“Globalfoundries is striving to be among the major contract chipmakers of Qualcomm and Apple, vying for 14nm chip orders from the two vendors, according to industry sources,” Josephine Lien and Jessie Shen report for DigiTimes.

“TSMC reportedly fabricates all of Apple’s A8 chips using its 20nm process technology, but has failed to grab the entire orders for the upcoming A9,” Lien and Shen report. “TSMC tends to maintain its prices causing it to lose a portion of Apple’s A9 chip orders, according to sources with the IC design sector. Unlike TSMC, both Samsung and Globalfoundries could drop their prices for 14nm FinFET node technology in order to win orders, the sources commented.”

MacDailyNews Note: GlobalFoundries’ headquarters located in Santa Clara, California. The Emirate of Abu Dhabi is the owner of the company through its subsidiary Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC). The firm manufactures integrated circuits in high volume for semiconductor companies such as AMD, Broadcom, Qualcomm, and STMicroelectronics. It has five 200 mm wafer fabrication plants in Singapore, and two 300 mm fabrication plants each in Germany and Singapore, as well as a new 300 mm fabrication plant in Malta, Saratoga County, New York in the United States scheduled to begin volume production in 2013. Fab 8, located in Luther Forest Technology Campus, Saratoga County, New York is GlobalFoundries’ new 300 mm Fab that is capable of 28nm technology and below, including the aforementioned 14nm FinFET technology with production ramp slated to start in early 2015.

  1. wow! saratoga county! some people won’t have to go far to get their new high tech chips. (this is a bit of a pun – according to some accounts potato chips were invented in saratoga in, i think, the late 1800s.)

  2. I hope GlobalFoundries takes a lot of business away from Samsung.

The potato chip was indeed invented in New York state in 1853 by chef George Crum at the Moon’s Lake House in Saratoga.
