House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement after President Obama urged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to impose new federal “net neutrality” regulations that would undermine a free and open Internet and hurt our economy:
It’s disappointing, but not surprising, that the Obama administration continues to disregard the people’s will and push for more mandates on our economy. An open, vibrant Internet is essential to a growing economy, and net neutrality is a textbook example of the kind of Washington regulations that destroy innovation and entrepreneurship. Federal bureaucrats should not be in the business of regulating the Internet – not now, not ever. In the new Congress, Republicans will continue our efforts to stop this misguided scheme to regulate the Internet, and we’ll work to encourage private-sector job creation, starting with many of the House-passed jobs bills that the outgoing Senate majority ignored.

People can have different opinions on either, but the term monster does make more sense in the context of starting wars, based on rationals that didn’t pan out.
Bush Sr was as staunch a Republican as his son, but his more strategic and surgical wars did not get him widely referred to as a monster. He clearly felt war should be avoided, despite taking action when he deemed it necessary.

With the exception of crap Internet providers, we all want the exact same thing here: open, free, and affordable Internet. It shouldn’t be a wedge issue – but somehow, by phrasing the means of getting there as a “regulation”, republicans somehow are being tricked into jumping take the same side of crap internet providers.
This sentiment of “all regulation is evil” sounds beyond stupid to my ears, yet it somehow resonates among Republicans. I don’t get how ideas so stupid can be so infectious – but clearly the crap Internet companies know how to use it and trick half the country.

The thing is, if these large corporations wouldn’t screw up the business they’re in, regulation wouldn’t be necessary. The only reason that the idea of regulating the internet came to be, is because the few gatekeepers who control internet access decided to try and see how they can make even more money on it while also limiting it. Corporations hate regulation, yet they’re the one’s who bring it upon themselves. If they’d play fair, no regulation would be necessary.
I don’t get conservatives who freak out anytime the government decides it needs to regulate something. That regulation is there to protect them, yet they fight it because they don’t like government telling people what to do. “Cutting of your nose to spite your face”, look it up.
Oh yeah, regulation also helps level the playing field, so that anyone can start a business in a given area, exactly what conservatives want and strive for, for anyone in America to have a chance to make it. No regulation allows for oligarchies, or worse, a monopoly to form, which absolutely closes the door for new businesses to start in a given field or small businesses to compete.
If anything, conservatives should be all for and the ones championing regulation.
One should think of the big picture. The more people that benefit the better ? Not exactly. Let us refine. Let regulation help the more people and institutions who need respectable internet speed at affordable prices. Libraries and rural customers on dialup or those with too pricey ISPs.
Regulation and other solutions may be 1) tax incentives 2) subsidized pricing 3) price controls 4) government owned ISPs 5) locally owned ISP’s.
Any quick denouncing of alternatives shows a lack of imagination.

Excuse me and begging everyone’s pardon, but would someone please explain to me with logic and without bias, anger, rancor or other political points of view, an understanding of what “Net Neutrality” really means?
As I understand it, I can now access every accessible site on the web at the same speed, relative of course to the programming code used on the site. What is being proposed is that web sites with more money can pay money to ISPs and in effect, be more quickly accessible to end users.
I should be able to access MDS for example, at the same speed as, say, cnn.com and not have MDS slowed down (or FEEL slower) because cnn.com can afford to pay Verison, AT&T, or whatever carrier money so that cnn.com can be in “a fast lane” (seemingly delivered faster to the end user). To my mind, this essentially slows down MDS because if MDS is slow by comparison, people may not wait for MDS to load and may go somewhere else for their news… say cnn.com.
I would like to see the High School Kid’s blog get to my computer as fast as Apple.Com’s (again, taking programming of the web page into account).

How did we have the historic record of private sector job growth over the last 5 years if government regulation was so limiting? I have already seen how not keeping the Internet neutral is really onerous to the average person. Can you imagine if electricity wasn’t regulated and poor people only got spotty service and the wealthy had uninterrupted continuous electricity that was mostly wasted or never used? The GOP is so anti-average Joe who then turns around and votes for them. It’s just amazing.
The Fed has been juicing the economy for years to get us out of the recession. Those private sector jobs have been “bought” with 5 trillion in national debt. Our leaders have generously paid for it with our grandchildrens money…

I, for one, and fully in favor of net neutrality, for the simple reason that I do not trust our corporate oligopoly (how many cable companies are there “competing”?) to manage the internet in a way that empowers individuals and small businesses.
