iPhone 6 Plus ‘Bendgate’ video faked? Curious timing issues raise questions

“Apple wants you and all your friends to know that the iPhone 6 Plus probably won’t bend if you put it in your pocket or carry it around from day to day,” Elyse Betters reports for Pocket-lint. “And if it does bend, as with any Apple product, you should contact Apple.”

“In an official statement to Pocket-lint, Apple has suggested the entire situation is overblown and not at all a legitimate concern that customers should worry about: ‘With normal use a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six days of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a bent iPhone 6 Plus,'” Betters reports. “It’s worth mentioning that one of the most popular videos from [Unbox Therapy], which reportedly showed an iPhone 6 Plus bending with little pressure applied, appears to be edited in a way that might reveal the video is a fake.”

“Notice the video shows the iPhone 6 Plus drastically bending at 1:40 minutes, and the time on the phone at that point displays 2:26 PM. The man in the video then proceeds to explain around 2:35 minutes into the video that he just finished bending the phone with his thumbs” Betters reports. “But there’s one problem with that version of events: The iPhone 6 Plus he supposedly ‘just’ bent displays the time 1:59 PM around 2:45 minutes into the video, roughly 27 minutes before the smartphone is shown succumbing to little pressure.”

  1. I did notice the time on the iPhone a few times, but figured the guy was taking multiple recordings to get his desired result.

Still don’t believe that bend gate will amount to much. I’ll wait for the Consumer Reports results before I believe… lol

  2. When I first saw this the first thing I noticed was how much pressure he had to exert to actually bend the phone. Look at the color of his fingertips as he presses and note how his hands start to shake as he stresses the phone to the point of bending.

Apple should have his picture posted in every Apple Store in case this bozo tries to get a replacement.

    1. The video hung when I watched it again. I had not noticed before that he points out that his iPhone 6 Plus already has a flaw (or something) prior to the video bend test. How bent was it before the test? What was used to bend it before the video?

Apple showed off the stress and bending lab yesterday. How about some real numbers from a load cell while bending a phone. And, when this guy bent his iPhone, he placed his thumbs directly at the prior bent location at the edge of the iPhone 6 Plus. Yes, it could be the weak point. But, can you do that in your pocket? I put the glass in towards my leg to protect it in an empty pocket. He bent his in a way to avoid using the glass and other inner parts to support the force holding the top and bottom edges to maximize the leverage bending the iPhone. This would be hard to do in my pocket in real life. Have him put one in his pocket and do that again. I would like to see that video again and again. Keep in mind, the iPhone was still working so he could call 911 if he ever gets it to bend in his pocket!

      1. Totally agree that would be fraud and anyone guilty of trying to damage a companies business in that way should be sued or prosecuted if deemed a criminal act for substantial recompense. This sort of thing very likely encouraged or produced by jealous competitors must be stopped.

      2. Hes a liar, the video is doctored, lol I would be surprised if that was the same iPhone throughout the entire video..
Apple should sue this guy. The time on the phones gives it away. notice I said phones because I don’t believe the one in the start of the video is the same one in the end.

  3. so he bent it once off camera, then bent it back to make video. he did that so when he filmed himself bending it with hands it would bend easily since he already bent it once.

    total fraud

  4. From the beginning i knew this particular issue was over-blown. I did mention somewhere that a company which did not mind to cheat its own customers by boosting their mobiles core performance results artificially might have been the ones who spoilt the experience of loyal customers who wanted to buy the iPhone 6 standing queue on the first day. Would not be surprised if they sponsored people to stand in line to be spoil sport to Apple lovers. Do not forget the news that S**su*g had people in line last year during iPhone 5S launch to understand how Apple products alone could generate such enthusiasm.

They can’t make thinner phones this or generate such demand for their class and cheap attitude they might as well do these.

I was only disappointed with Apple on their execution on relay of launch event and 8.0.1 disaster. But these are so so rare. I would re-iterate that though we all are frustrated we should give Apple the leverage to fail 1% of the time. Its only fair.

Net result is Shenanigans(S**s**g) will be and remain so :).

  5. I was at an AT&T Store and looked carefully at an iPhone 6plus. It isn’t going to bend sticking it in your front pants pocket. If you have very tight pants with small front pockets and you sit down, maybe, just maybe, it might bend over a long period of time but you will be very uncomfortable during this process.

Now, if you stick this very thin, relatively large device in your back pocket and sit down, your body weight is probably large enough to cause a problem.

The iPhone 6plus is a very light, very thin, very complicated, expensive, powerful computer and should be treated as such. If you are in a business that is “rough and tumble” like construction or if you “throw your iPhone around”, get a case. You will be glad you did.

As for me, my iPhone 5s and when I upgrade to the 6, it goes “screen side” to my leg in my left pocket of my 501s. Nothing else goes in that pocket. When in my car, it is in the center console, When at a desk, it is next to my monitor. I’ve never had a case and I’ve had no problems. I do not walk down the street blabbing away oblivious to my surroundings*. I pay attention to what I’m doing. Physics is a game you will lose if you are not careful.

*I do not listen to music while running. Spend $150 for an ipod if you do.

I do not listen to music with headphones/earphones while in public or while I am interacting with others. The ” What?” response when someone talks to you while you are wearing headphones is ALWAYS rude. This is you saying to the person who is talking to you, “my music is more important than you”. ALWAYS. Rarely, in a business office is headphone use polite or businesslike. If you use headphones in an office, make sure you can hear normal conversation. Think I’m wrong? then you are either selfish or rude. You are not in a minority. Doesn’t make it right.

      Exactly.
      Thank You.

  6. I say we start file a shareholder class action suit against
this smug jerk and take every penny he has saved and every dollar he hopes to make in the future.
One more thing – We keel haul the SOB on Steve Jobs yacht…….
after allowing the barnacles to accumulate for 12 months.

  7. The 24 hr news cycle on cable TV was bad enough. How we have the 1440 minute news cycle from the twitter/facebook/youtube/etc where the stupidest subject can set the internet baboons chattering and hooting at jet engine level decibels.
Making a splash on the ‘net is all that matters to some, and like baboon societies, taking shots at the to ranking baboons by lower ranking individuals is part of the game.
Is there much doubt about the timing of all the publicity hits Apple has taken the past few weeks coinciding with the iPhone intro?

    1. I have learned a valuable lessons in life, if we wanted to damage thing it will break, if wanted to protect what we love it will last, as simple as that. This guy intentionally wanted to break the Smartphone with all his mighty powers, enough said.

  8. I also like when he says he pulled it out of his pocket that it was slightly bent he never just holds it he shows that side while applying force to it. He never just sits it on the table to show the “bend” from his pocket – total fraud and I’m sure he got paid to do that.

    1. It’s easy to keep it on that long, look where his hands are.. he keeps touching the home button and moving his fingers on the screen (not purposely)
You can keep the lock screen “on” for a very long time if you don’t allow the screen to time out.

        1. Simplified for some:

Press home button, iPhone screen lights up.
Put your thumb on your wallpaper/notification/camera icon….. And START to move finger to open, then back off……
Or scroll up/down on lock screen.

Screen will stay on LONG past the default time.
I do this every morning when I wake up instead of opening my phone. I can scroll up/down the notifications I got I verify and see if there is anything I care to look at right away, if not… Clear the lock screen and go about my day.

It’s not hard to do. And in the video, his fingers are constantly moving on the lock screen, so in effect he’s doing the same thing.

  9. In an interview with Emily Chang on Bloomberg News, he mentioned he was inspired to do the bend test by one of his RELATIVES stating his 6+ was found to be bent in a couple of days of actual use and jeans-pocket storage? I wish we could know who that relative might be to verify that that person had actually purchased a 6+ during the launch. This verification might help verify or refute the authenticity of these overall “test methods” and claims suggested in this video.

  10. Well I don’t know about all this but I think one thing is for sure. After this week’s unfortunate and malodorous events and revelations, all of Apple’s engineers are going to be much more vigilant minding their respective gussets.
