Apple iPhone 6 display hiccup leaves supply chain scrambling, sources say

“Suppliers to Apple Inc are scrambling to get enough screens ready for the new iPhone 6 smartphone as the need to redesign a key component disrupted panel production ahead of next month’s expected launch, supply chain sources said,” Reuters reports.

“It’s unclear whether the hiccup could delay the launch or limit the number of phones initially available to consumers, the sources said, as Apple readies larger-screen iPhones for the year-end shopping season,” Reuters reports. “But the issue highlights the risks and challenges that suppliers face to meet Apple’s tough specifications, and comes on the heels of a separate screen technology problem, since resolved, in making thinner screens for the larger iPhone 6 model.”

“Two supply chain sources said display panel production suffered a setback after the backlight that helps illuminate the screen had to be revised, putting screen assembly on hold for part of June and July,” Reuters reports. “Output is now back on track and suppliers are working flat-out to make up for lost time, the supply chain sources added. Japan Display Inc, Sharp Corp and South Korea’s LG Display Co Ltd have been selected to make the iPhone 6 screens, the sources said.”

    1. Yes.

The issue supposedly cropped up in June — two months ago, and it was resolved well over a month ago. The anticipated announcement will happen in just over two weeks.

      IF this were all true.
      1) They’ve been “flat out” for over six weeks.
      2) Why wasn’t this reported over a month ago (after the fix was in place)?

      Pure FUD and stock manipulation.

  1. If this report is true, the good news is that this backlight brightness issue was discovered in early production and was rectified in July before initiating volume production. While it would be ideal to discover and resolve such design issues earlier in the R&D process, it is often the case that one or two problems slip through into early production. I suspect that this is true for all technology companies, and Apple seems to perform far better than most considering that it often pushes technologies in its new product releases.

Apple has three suppliers in Japan Display, Sharp Corp, and LG Display. While there may be iPhone 6 supply shortages during the early rush, these three companies are working hard to satisfy Apple’s demands for tens of millions of iPhone 6 displays. I hope that they are treating their employees well and paying them overtime.

  2. Complete lie. At this late hour, with the 6 being released in 30 days or less they already have millions of phones ready to ship, no change to any parts. Stock manipulation 100%.

  3. Let me get this straight. The rumor about the rumored release of the iPhone 6 on the rumored reveal date of September 9 about the rumored public availability on September 19th is rumored to be delayed or not, which is also rumored to be in short supply or not, right?
