“Confirming reports that Skype no longer works with older versions of Apple’s OS X, Microsoft on Thursday announced it has ended support for Macs running OS X 10.5.8 Leopard or earlier,” AppleInsider reports.
“Starting last week, Skype users began to complain on the company’s forum that they were being locked out from accessing the popular voice over IP service, reports TUAW,” AppleInsider reports. “As complaints mounted, it was guessed that Skype was no longer operational on Macs running older versions of OS X.”
AppleInsider reports, “Microsoft today confirmed the change in service…”

Didn’t Apple do the same for OS X 10.5.x?
Who discontinued support for what?
Yeah. I beat Microsoft to the punch. I ended support for Skype on my computers when Microsoft bought it. Bazingaa!
Me too. However to be completely honest, once Face Time came to the Desktop it happened. Yahoo and Skype both fail when compared to FaceTime. Try talking for oh about 30 minutes to 4 hours using either Skype or Yahoo… Apple has them beat in quality and ease with Face Time.
Meh. Who cares.
Probably PowerPC Mac users.
Hey! And just what is wrong with my G5 tower? It still runs great, albeit a little slower than my 2012 MacMini. Heh heh.
In what way did I say there was something wrong with your G5 Power Mac? I have one running all the time, connected to my HDTV. 🙂 Still very useful…
So M$ first killed it quietly and then said “yeah, we did that”. Typical, not the first time. M$ is still showing their monopoly ways.
Just so you are aware, M$ has recently been downgraded to M¢.
I stand corrected, No 1 Silvery Avian. And I’m eagerly awaiting the time M¢’s monopoly footprint will be reduced to that of a Monopoly board ;-).
There is a cure:
http://community.skype.com/t5/Mac/My-solution-to-continue-using-Skype-2-8-on-older-OS-X-Lion-etc/td-p/3454441
Essentially just add the line:
127.0.0.1 ui.skype.com
Into private/etc/hosts file
👍
Requires admin user privilege but not very nerdy trick to do😎✌️
Solved the problem on Leopard😊
The story clarifies that M$ is temporarily removing Skype access for Mac OS X 10.5.8 and reports another version will be available soon. The problem is not whether they will or they won’t, but their lack of communication to the general Public. A company this clueless about customer support should not be in business.
Apple isn’t exactly a saint in this regard either. Apple has often pulled the plug on products and services with little or no warning.
As others have lamented here, iOS7 forced adoption was a particularly bad offense. People with slow 32-bit hardware took an instant performance and battery hit, and Apple did NOTHING to help them revert back to iOS6 or provide official assistance on what to do to improve old iPhone performance under iOS7. Sorry Apple apologists, but that ranks as horrid user support from any company.
Actually, Apple came out with iOS7.1, which pretty much solved performance problems for owners of 4 and 4s.
i just made a FaceTime audio call with a friend across the country and it worked great. F Skype
Wait… MS owns Skype? Ewwww! Time to delete that app!
Next in the news, MS pulls Skype for Mac. Cue the crickets.
There are so many cheap options, depending on the country you need to call. I opt for TruPhone. Sometimes Vyke.
I can’t remember the last time I used a computer to make a call; it’s always on the phone app. Once in a blue moon I’ll use the Mac to sling a quick text message across the world.
Money talks, M$ walks.
Call from USA to Bangkok on home WiFi to mobile phone…
Vyke: 1.7¢/min. SMS:5¢
TruPhone: 2¢/min
Skype: 2.3¢ + 4.9¢ connection fee. SMS 6.3¢
To Asia, the other services beat them almost every time.
I know the difference is chump change, but it can add up if you talk the way I do to buddies ½ hour to 1 hour at a time.
Sometimes my buddies forget how I connect and freak out, thinking I just spent $100 on a phone call and I tell them to calm down, it was only $1.25.
NEW at the source article as of Friday August 8th:
Update: A Microsoft spokesperson told AppleInsider on Friday that a version of Skype aimed at Leopard users “will soon be available for download.”
