Apple to unveil iPhone 6 on September 16, start sales on October 14, source says

“Apple may be planning to launch the iPhone 6 on Tuesday, October 14 as the month itself will be an incredibly busy one for the company, according to a source that spoke to MacRumors citing an internal Apple Retail Store meeting,” Richard Padilla reports for MacRumors.

“The source notes that a senior Store Leader mentioned October 14th as being an ‘immense’ day for Apple, adding that the whole month of October would be very busy for stores and the company itself,” Padilla reports. “Apple is also said to planning a media event for Tuesday, September 16, coming a month ahead of the device’s launch.”

Padilla reports, “A report last week claimed that Apple is planning a mid-September event for the iPhone 6 and iOS 8, which would be followed by an October event showcasing the iWatch, OS X Yosemite, new iPads, and new Macs.”

    1. I fully agree. Has this author never heard of the “Osborne Effect”?

If Apple were to do a full introduction of the iPhone 6, giving the details of the models and prices, but not shipping the iPhone 6 for a full month, then the sales of the iPhone 5c and 5s would suddenly drop dramatically. Sales of iPhone 5x models for that month would be so low it would *drastically* affect Apple’s bottom line.

    1. That was the first one, back then they could get away with it especially as it needed ftc approval and was therefore certain to leak into the public domain anyway. Now they would not want to stifle sales for any longer than absolutely necessary.
What’s a month’s worth of iPhone sales – few billion. I’ll have some of that.

    2. Which iPhone would that be? I know when Steve Job’s first introduced original iPhone he did so in Jan but didn’t release until June but this was because of government regs via the FCC.

    3. Yes, the *FIRST* iPhone was announced several months before it started shipping. At the time of the announcement — and during the several months before the original iPhone shipped — Apple had no products that would be hit by the Osborne Effect. There is extremely little risk in pre-announcing something that no one else is doing yet — including yourself.

Today, Apple is shipping lots and lots of iPhones every day. Pre-announcing the next phone will kill current sales.

AND, it gives the copiers another month to ready their products in an attempt to compete. Why would Apple give the copiers that extra month lead time? It wouldn’t

    4. Yes, but that was when they needed to give developers time to build apps and there was no existing iPhone to cannibalize. Mid Oct may be for large screen 6 and iTime, both of which have been rumored to have slipped. However, I believe no FUD before its time.

  1. I believe the guidance for the September quarter includes at least one new phone. If Apple pushes everything out to October then they would have to inform the SEC regarding lower guidance for the September quarter. Since this has not occurred I think at least one new phone will be released this quarter.

Another point: the rumor states the iWatch will be released in October. If this is true, then this is good news because every rumor over the last week or so has claimed the iWatch will be delayed and not released until December or sometime in 2015.

  2. Padilla didn’t say the iPhone would go on sale Oct 15, just everything else. Wouldn’t surprise me if the iPhone 6 went on sale the day after the announcement (along with iOS 8). Then the other goodies a month later.
