“Samsung Electronics stumbled again this week, announcing it had indefinitely postponed the roll out of phones running its home-grown Tizen operating system in Russsia,” Aaron Pressman reports for Yahoo Finance.
“Tizen, which replaces the Google Android system that powers most Samsung smartphones, was supposed to help make the South Korean company’s phones more appealing, or perhaps even cheaper,” Pressman reports. “But few customers want a smartphone that can’t run popular apps and Tizen doesn’t offer many. In a brief statement explaining the delay, Samsung cited problems with the ‘Tizen ecosystem.'”

“The latest problem follows a slew of knocks and shortfalls for Samsung,” Pressman reports. “Phone and tablet sales have slumped and Samsung reported its lowest profit in two years in the second quarter. Operating income dropped 24% from a year earlier to 7.2 trillion won, or $7.1 billion, for the three months ended June 30.”

Samsung “didn’t give any details about what precisely needed to be defined or how long the delay would be,” Geoffrey Smith reports for Fortune, “but the reference to the ‘Tizen ecosystem’ hinted at fresh concerns over the availability of apps and related services that are needed to make the product sell.”
Smith reports, “Samsung has already launched Tizen-driven smartwatches and cameras, but is desperate to extend it to smartphones in order to gain more control over the end-user experience in its most important products. Its license agreement with Google restricts its freedom to make more than cosmetic changes to the Android system.”

Well, Yojimbo007, I believe that Abrahamic’s post is accurate as far as Steve Jobs’ approach to life was concerned.
It seems to me that the adherents to many of the popular organized religions are the ones who claim to have all of the answers. In fact, their religions indoctrinate them with the idea that they are right and everyone else is wrong. Even more unappealing, they are instructed to convert others to their way of thinking so that their religious organism can grow and others wither. And despite the credos of peace, and brotherhood, these differences in dogma often lead to war. Many religions have (or continue to) glorify combat in their name as somehow being “holy.” It did not make sense to me as a child, and it does not make sense now.
Note that I am commenting on organized religions in which money, power, and control over the lives and behavior of others seems to be paramount. I am not commenting on the existence of God, or the lack thereof. I do not claim to know the answer to that one.
Too bad, I was curious to see what they would come up with and (even more so) to see Android even further fragmented. In the long run, I figure Tizen will hurt Android more than any other platform because it will go after the same target audience, but will be a totally different compatibility. Not to mention completely confusing their own customers with two separate OSes on different lines of their phones.
1. No fragmentation because Tizen is not Android
2. Samsung’s plan was to use Tizen for their very low end phones and Android for high end phones. Basically, they were going to use Tizen to convert their feature phone business into smartphones.
3. Confusing customers with different OSes on different lines of their phones. Please. Hardware OEMs never tie themselves to a single OS, not for phones or anything else. Look at PCs: Samsung makes Windows PCs as well as Chromebooks. HP, Asus and Acer make PCs and tablets that run Windows, ChromeOS, Android and Linux. Samsung used to sell Windows 8 phones, and the only reason why they stopped was because they bombed. Nokia was on the verge of abandoning selling only Windows phones in order to sell Android phones also (in addition to feature phones with their own OS) right before Microsoft regrettably bought them.
Is this a replay of a story I heard only a few years ago? I think they had berries and they were giving them away in a 2 for 1 or the whole family gets a phone if you will please buy one. It went by the name RIMM.
Maybe it was a PC computer maker that ended up going private so know one would know how bad it was getting before they have to close the doors. I think they named the company after the founder, Mr. Dell.

When it comes to why Samsung cannot compare to Apple, this is exhibit A. They are mere box assemblers, the Dell of smartphones. The one time they tried fashioning an entire ecosystem all by themselves and it’s gone down in flames. For years on end they’ve tried this Tizen crap and they can’t even get it off the ground. Truly pathetic.
Continue assembling those boxes, Samsung. No amount of marketing can hide the fact that you will never be Apple. You will never fully control your own destiny, never see a day where you answer to no one and are free to unilaterally make decisions that spark revolutions and change the world.
I think Samsung wants more control of the operating system because the current version of Android isn’t a close enough copy to iOS.
With total control, they can make it look identical.
More delusional fanboy nonsense. Samsung is not trying to compete with Apple or be Apple. You are aware that Samsung was already in the smartphone market – and selling lots of smartphones – before Apple entered it?
Samsung isn’t trying to spark revolutions to change the world. They are only trying to make money by selling products like everybody else. And their product lineup is much larger than what Apple chooses to sell. Samsung will still be making appliances, components, electronics etc. long after this little tiff with Apple over smartphones and tablets is over just like they were before. Oh yes, and Apple will continue to be one of Samsung’s biggest and best paying customers because Apple needs Samsung’s parts to make their products.
That is the hilarious thing about the Samsung haters. Buy a Galaxy phone or tablet, Samsung makes money. Buy an iPhone, iPad or MacBook, Samsung makes money! They are in the catbird seat, where Intel used to be 10-20 years ago.

No sooner do we see the beginning of serious decline for the serial copy/cloner Samsung, then up pops Xiaomi with the Mi3 which is another shameful vergin’-on-the-ridiculous Chinese iPhone clone/copy…and they don’t even attempt to defend their or dispute the allegation of copying – their PR is that it’s normal for eastern companies so…ya boo sucks America. And they’re supported by the Chinese leadership. It’s almost like they’re saying “We’ll let you do business here but we WILL copy everything you bring to market here too”
This is not good in the strategy to destroy Android. The World needs an open source alternative to Android.
Time to promote FirefoxOS and Ubuntu Mobile…

Oh please. Were FirefoxOS (and incidentally Firefox is now selling Android phones!) or Ubuntu Mobile to take off, Apple fans would hate them too. It isn’t Android or Samsung that Apple fans hate. Instead, Apple fans hate companies that choose to compete with them and consumers who choose to patronize them.
Before Apple fans hated Samsung, they hated Google. Before they hated Google, they hated Microsoft. Before they hated Microsoft, they hated IBM. (And in addition to hating Samsung, they hate Amazon. Why? Well just because.) And when these smartphone/tablet wars end and the tech world moves onto something else, Apple fans will hate those companies and their consumers too. Now that Apple is making a push for the enterprise with former enemy IBM, I suppose we are going to see Oracle and Red Hat bashing on sites like these too.
