Apple announces 9 new CarPlay partners

“Apple today announced nine additional partners committed to shipping CarPlay integration in future vehicles marking the first expansion to that list since the feature was officially introduced in March,” Zac Hall reports for 9to5Mac. “Joining the list of existing CarPlay partners for 2014 and beyond is Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Mazda, and Ram. Each new auto manufacturer is committed to integrating CarPlay in models planned to be announced and released in the future.”

“Audi, as you may recall, first mentioned its plans to introduce CarPlay in an announcement last week,” Hall reports, “and yesterday the luxury car maker expanded on those plans saying support will roll out in Europe in 2015 and the United States during the following year.”

Hall reports, “CarPlay partners with plans to ship vehicles sporting the feature this year include Hyundai, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Honda.”

  1. Hopefully for maker offering both its one OR the other so we can stay google free. No doubt they have come up with a way to implement tracking even when not in use

  2. Fiat, Alfa and Abarth are all part of the same group as Ferrari, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see the rest of the VAG group join in, so that’s Volkswagen, Seat, Lambourghini, Bentley and Bugatti…

    1. Volkswagen Group sells passenger cars under the Porsche, Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, SEAT, Škoda and Volkswagen marques; motorcycles under the Ducati brand; and commercial vehicles under the MAN, Scania, Neoplan and Volkswagen.

It does NOT include Fiat –

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (FCA) sells passenger cars including Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Ferrari, Fiat, Fiat Professional, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati; and commercial vehicles Iveco and Ram Trucks.

Of interest, the Volkswagen group is owned by –
Porsche SE (50.7%) – the Porsche Family.
State of Lower Saxony (20%) – a German state situated in northwestern Germany
      Qatar Holding LLC (17%)
Capital Group Companies (4.097% participation, 5.6% voting rights)

Looking forward to a new car with CarPlay.

    2. And let’s not forget that Ferrari (and therefore FIAT) own Maserati as well and – although it’s coughing up blood in Europe – Lancia.

The interesting thing is that – to date – FIAT has used a truly POS implementation of a BlueTooth technology stack from MSFT which the group markets as “Blue & Me” or some equally tortuous pun.

Genuinely it is shite: the car will regularly lose pairing with the personal device (although that could just as easily be the fault of the device one imagines) and the information – on a Fiat 500 – only seems to appear in the instrument cluster in front of the driver as opposed to ON THE FRICKIN’ RADIO so everybody can see what’s playing.

It makes you wonder if FIAT think that you’d never have any friends in the car…

  3. Funny I don’t see Ho Ho Holden on the list, they must be Holden out for a better deal, or perhaps Apple is just going to be providing car play to real automobile manufacturers, you know those that will be around past 2017. Then again maybe Holden needs a great iCon to convince Apple to make carplay available to them, and what better iCon can their be than Ralf Harris, Anustralia’s pride and joy, a true representative of the nation.

    1. You’re correct. Audi is supporting both. Supporting CarPlay does not necessarily mean they are exclusive to it. Many of the listed manufacturers will most likely support multiple systems to accomodate as many customers’ preferences as possible. It just happens one of the choices is now CarPlay.

    1. Car play is a platform like the Mac. The Mac isn’t obsolete because like Car Play it evolves. Indeed that is the whole point of the design of the CarPlay platform, for rather than as with previous such systems being effectively hard wired into the vehicle it will be continually upgradeable via Apple. keep up now.

  4. Glad that when Mazda was under Ford’s control, they didn’t follow the mothership into the MS Sync abyss. Ford thought that their partnership with MS gave them a technological edge. Instead, the bug-ridden software plunged the company down the quality and reliability rankings (at one point they had climbed into the top 10, and the first full year with the MS-platformed MyFordTouch system dropped them into the bottom 5).

Mazda makes drivers’ cars, practically the only middle market auto maker that over the years hasn’t bloated up and softened down their North American offerings (like Toyota and Honda did in order to appease customers moving over from GM). Up to this point, they had taken a more cautious approach with implementing overly complicated infotainment setups. Going with Apple is a step in the right direction, especially my next car will likely be another Mazda (family currently has three of them).
