Apple enlists MLB, NHL, and NBA pro athletes to test iWatch fitness capabilities

“Apple has teamed up with some of the sports world’s most notable professional athletes in order to test the upcoming ‘iWatch’s’ fitness capabilities in intense training environments, according to a source with knowledge of the testing,” Mark Gurman reports for 9to5Mac.

“This source says that Apple has invited athletes from the MLB, NHL, and NBA to its Cupertino-based campus on multiple occasions over the past several weeks to brief the players on the upcoming wearable device and provide an opportunity for testing to be conducted in professional conditioning environments,” Gurman reports. “Apple is said to be working with Los Angeles Lakers basketball player Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Kings right winger Dustin Brown, and a few other star athletes, including a player from the Boston Red Sox, on the testing project.”

Gurman reports, “The athletes are said to have signed non-disclosure agreements regarding the existence of the upcoming Apple wearable device.”

      1. My bad. I should have realized baseball fanatics are as good at taking a joke as they are at taking a fastball low and away.

(If you’re not sure-yes, that was another joke)

        1. Hey I thought it funny, even I have noticed some of those beer guts bouncing up and down while they amble around. But don’t expect humour here to be appreciated even zune tang couldn’t break that particular barrier.

    1. You really should explain what rugby’s all about if you are going to mention it to an American audience. Fortunately this video quickly shows what the real man’s sport is all about. I don’t see much difference between that and gridiron football myself, except for all the protective gear.

  1. Yup that sounds so credible…
Apple starting intense testing just 2 months before release …
A product that has probably been in development for 4 years or so !

    1. Given Apple’s secretive culture and the steps a product goes through before becoming final, this would be about the right time that first runs of a final product are being received. If you think about how long Apple gives game developers for those secret sneak peaks and advanced development opportunities, this could be falling in line with that.

I’m sure this isn’t the first testing being done, but possibly the first being done with outside entities.

      1. Absolutely this is about fine tuning and marketing rather than serious product testing. If a product like this is to succeed it need to tai acceptance and promotion be it paid or through word of mouth… You know like Beats has managed to spread the word on their products even though they have no direct role in fitness. Not a tough concept to comprehend.

  2. Oh please, More of 19 year old Mark Gurmans wet dreams concocted during his most recent bubble bath. This is the same guy that got EVERYTHING about WWDC wrong then went psycho in an editorial saying how it was all a conspiracy and Apple changed everything just to prove him wrong. I mean 9to5mac is more like 9to5fantasy with a wet dream or too thrown in

  3. I mean 9to5mac is more like 9to5fantasy with a wet dream or two thrown in these days. Read it but get your real news from more reliable publications.

  4. I would take this with a mountain of salt. These guys are surrounded by the adoring public at all times, even when they work out. No way would this remain a secret. Somebody among the acolytes, sycophants and Joe Public woulda noticed by now.

  5. As a fan of both Apple and the LA Kings I have to say that the biggest red flag in this is mention of Dustin Brown who, as Kings captain, has been pretty damn busy the last month or so winning the Stanley Cup and hardly likely to allow a distraction of a trip to Cupertino. Not that he wouldn’t be a great beta tester…just not during the playoffs.
