Makers of accessories ramp up for 5.5-inch iPhone, sparking speculation of September launch

“While rumors have pointed to a late 2014 or early 2015 launch of Apple’s rumored 5.5-inch iPhone 6 model, several months later than a 4.7-inch model, Cantor Fiztgerald analyst Brian White points out in a new research note that companies are already beginning to ramp up their production of accessories for the larger device,” Kelly Hodgkins reports for MacRumors.

“Based on this observation, White believes the larger-sized iPhone 6 model may in fact debut this fall alongside the 4.7-inch iPhone 6,” Hodgkins reports,” and his note follows a recent report that Apple has solved its battery issues with the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 and is planning to manufacture 20 million units by the end of the year.”

“According to White, manufacturers are also showing a “much broader ramp” of accessories compatible with the rumored 4.7-inch iPhone 6,” Hodgkins reports.

Hodgkins reports, “The 4.7-inch version is widely believed to be launching in September and will headline Apple’s fall product lineup, which Apple executive Eddy Cue claims is the best product pipeline he has seen in his 25 years at Apple.”

  1. I am actually pretty surprised that Apple is going to do this…if the rumors are true, of course. I always thought that Apple wasn’t interested in creating large iPhones, and after seeing the response from certain members of the Apple community, they don’t seem enthused about a large iPhone either. I wonder what made Apple think that this would be a good business decision.

        1. Your analogy isn’t particularly clever or apropos. If Apple releases BOTH these larger sized phones it WILL see serious damage inflicted on Android. I think most of us would like that very much indeed. That would be more thermonuclear like it! As a stockholder I will be very happy if this is true. I just hope the 4″ doesn’t go away in the process.

    1. Maybe they want to appeal beyond the natural iPhone or Apple community for that’s how you expand your reach. If Apple had simply designed Macs for the existing Mac community back in the nineties we wouldn’t see the Apple we have now.

      1. “Natural iPhone?” “The Apple community?” What the hell do those comments mean? Do you assume that the small current iPhone is natural and a larger iPhone will be unnatural? That’s insane. Do you assume that the “Apple community” consists of you and people who think like you? And only think like you? That’s truly insane. People want a larger iPhone and that’s no anomaly. So get off your high horse and quit being so full of yourself. The Apple community is anyone who purchases and uses Apple products. You are not a member of some elitist group.

  2. I believe the 5.5″ model will be an iPad nano. With cell technology it would be like a phablet. Without cell it could be cheeper than an iPhone. A lot of old rumors had the 5.5″ as being cheeper than the 4.7″, that made sense. However a iPad nano would. It would give Apple a new model to show in each of their best selling product lines, instead of two in their largest.

  3. I seriously doubt if Apple comes out with a 5.5″ iPhone they’d expect to sell 20 million in a quarter. That’d be nearly half of total iPhone sales.

EHistorically, large smartphones have been taking only 15-20% of the market. That would mean no more than 10 million of Apple’s quarterly share. There might be some extra demand for old people like me, or for some large phone enthusiasts, but I’d expect that to taper off in subsequent quarters.

Even then, I’m only interested in the slightly larger proposed 4.7″ model. I have an iPad for large format viewing. I also hope Apple keeps around the 4″ version for everyday users who want a smartphone that will fit in their pocket, not just the old iPhone 5s as a discounted model.

I also expect larger iPhones to be more expensive, not less so.

    1. I am surprised there are still people around thinking only 4″ phones fit in the pocket, when millions of people have been walking around with 5.5″ or bigger phones comfortably in their pocket for years now.
