Apple iPad sales are in deep trouble in 2014 or something

“Allow me to add my voice to the unwashed masses, irresponsibly speculating about Apple stock and whether it will go up or down from here,” Jeff Reeves writes for InvestorPlace. “I think it’s going down — and AAPL stock may continue to struggle for some time.”

“I think if you take a logical look at the company and its numbers, you can carve through the hysterics and get right to the heart of Apple’s growth challenge in the coming months and years. To me, that challenge begins and ends with the iPad — and I expect continued disappointment in Apple’s tablet sales to act as an anchor on AAPL stock,” Reeves writes. “Consensus estimates were for around 19.7 million iPads to be sold last quarter, up fractionally from the 19.5 million sold last year. But Apple sold just 16.35 million iPads for a 16%-plus decline in iPad sales. This is ugly given the fact that the broader industry trends still are very much in favor of growth.”

“Apple needs to claw back market share in a hurry,” Reeves writes. “And if it’s fighting against a slowing tablet market where competitors are slashing prices and just as desperate for tablet sales, it’s going to be a rough road for iPad sales in 2014 and beyond.”

  1. Do these analysts never learn? It’s truly amazing. Over and over again, they see that market share is not the litmus test for success in the CE market. It’s share of profits! Get it through yer thick skull, will ya?

    1. Apple has 100% of the 64-bit tablet market!!! How is that for market share.

Will we ever see a PR and advertising team again at Apple? Define the war and you can win the battles. “Think Different” again, please! Tablets are replacing the desk PC. Is there ANYONE wishing to buy a 32-bit desk PC anymore?

  2. Here is the money quote, “To me, that [growth] challenge begins and ends with the iPad.”
But, but but…what about the other dramatic growth possibilities? Won’t a combination of iPhone 6 and the China market be meaningful? What about iWallet, the next generation of iPad or ITV? Is Apple so stultified that breakthrough technologies are out of the question?

    1. Apple could enable NFC tomorrow and I would disable it. When it comes to taking money out of my pocket, I will be the one in control – not Apple or anyone else.

  3. Yep, Apple has my sympathy : a mere 150 Giga$ in the bank, and a paltry 20 Giga$ per quarter trickling in, dire poverty looms. And was it just a pathetic 80% of mobile profits globally?

Och, the poor wee blighters–they’re clearly doomed!

  4. Another AnalCyst threading misinformation from other misinformed paid by SameSung.

There is a threat to iPad and that is not from cheap knock-offs. It is from iPhone itself specially the possible larger iPhone. I have noticed more and more people who I know have both are using their phone more often even when their iPad is next to them.

Also, this Anal-cyst forgets to mention that many iPad owners like yours truly decided not to upgrade because this year’s release did not justify a switch. I will upgrade this year and I am sure many will when finger print sensor arrives on iPad and the icing will be better multi-tasking and more Ram support in the iOS 8.

  5. ANALysts have been calling for the demise of Apple for 20 years, no matter how well they continue to do since Jobs’ return AND through Cook’s tenure. Who the heck wants a friggin’ Galaxy Tab or worse a Surface? There is no comparison – the iPad will dominate for years to come.
