Apple’s iWatch mystery continues with Korean trademark filing

“In a new Bloomberg report published yesterday it was revealed that Swatch Group AG, the world’s largest watchmaker, said it has taken action against Apple over the most valuable technology company’s use of the iWatch label, which it says is too similar to its own iSwatch product,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.

“Yet when you check their website, there’s no prominent smartwatch to be found anywhere and they admitted last year that they ‘didn’t intend to become a big player in this field,'” Purcher reports. “While their paranoia of Apple obtaining the ‘iWatch’ brand, the fact is that more than 22 companies already own the brand name.”

“And beyond all explanation, Apple keeps applying for this trademark,” Purcher reports. “In fact, they just filed for this trademark in Korea last month.”

MacDailyNews Take: It’s not really ‘beyond all explanation.” It’s becoming more obvious with each passing day that Apple intends to use the trademark. Just because other companies have it trademarked currently doesn’t mean Apple isn’t going to use it. See: iPhone®.

  1. Well, it’s pretty clear that MDN is keeping an eye on this subject. Why is Apple continuing to file for this trademark if an iWatch is in doubt? I guess it goes back to All the President’s Men movie, follow the money.

    1. I support Apple in doing the right thing and filing patents. I am frustrated after the IP ripoffs of the last 30+ years. I see no revenge on infringing competitors that is as effective as Apple’s continuing success, which is bringing innovative, breakout products. I will continue to purchase, with pleasure.
