Apple v. Samsung docs reveal Korean copier knew Galaxy Tab was a flop, misled investors

“Top secret sales data revealed during the Apple vs. Samsung trial this week shows that Samsung knew that the Galaxy Tab sales figures (and overall Android tablet sales) it and various market research groups had fed to the media were not even remotely true,” Daniel Eran Dilger reports for AppleInsider.

“Over the past three years, IDC, Gartner and Strategy Analytics have generated data on the global tablet market which specifically conveys the idea that Apple’s iPad business has been dropping into minority market share while Samsung and other Android tablet makers have been shipping astronomical millions of units,” Dilger reports. “Samsung’s internal documents indicate that the company’s own public representation of its competitive position in the tablet market was not true, and that the company appears to have intentionally misled its own investors and the analysts covering its business with false statements about the health of its tablet sales.”

“We were skeptical in January 2011 when Strategy Analytics reported — based on a vague comment made to investors by a Samsung vice president — that the company had already shipped 2 million Galaxy Tabs, reducing Apple’s market share to 75% from 95% in less than six weeks,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune. “Nearly two dozen news outlets went with the report.”

“This week we learned, thanks to a February 2012 internal Samsung document marked ‘top secret’ and unearthed by Apple as part of its ongoing patent infringement proceedings, that we were right and those more credulous news outlets were wrong,” P.E.D. reports. “When Strategy Analytics was telling the world that Samsung sold 2 million Galaxy Tabs in six weeks, the truth was that it took Samsung all of 2011 to sell half that many.”

MacDailyNews Take: Samsung is a scumbag outfit. Boycott all Samsung-branded products.

As we wrote last August: Anyone who buys Samsung-branded products (phones, TVs, washers, dryers, microwaves, etc.) today is either obtuse or lacking in morals.

      1. Not necessarily Samsung, but definitely these so-called “analysts” who seem to take great delight to cherry-picked facts, then make unwarranted extrapolations from those “facts”.

But there’s not much to be done about general reporting which then very selectively pulls quotes out of context from these “reports” which make them appear even more misleading.

  1. Tim Cook once asked about those sales of android tablets due to the high percentage of web traffic on the iPad . Maybe they are selling them in a parallel universe or are being used as doorstops.

    1. Well, according to one physicist, there is evidence that not only is the universe infinite, but there are an infinite number of universes, so in at least one, Samsung managed to out-sell Apple in the pad market.
      Possibly.

  2. I see a lot of acquaintances and friends using Samsung phones. I am pretty sure the reason is that the carriers would rather sell Samsung than Apple products, whatever the reason. Most people who are not aware of the ongoing legal battle between Samsung and Apple (and there are many) see no reason not to buy Samsung. I try to do my best to educate them, especially if they’re friends, but it’s hard to overcome the billions Samsung spends on misinformation through the web. It’s disheartening.

    1. Phone company salespeople get a spiff when they sell Samsung Android phones. They should be required to disclose their conflict of interest. Uninformed customers probably think they are getting expert advice, when in reality they are just being played …for money. Hopefully, in time these people will realize their carrier totally ripped them off by selling them an inferior phone…

    1. The story is indeed out as a news flash on the financial and stock market web sites. The impact on the stock price?
Samsung stock has dropped a “whopping 1% in today’s trading” /s
It either means that the market has already discounted into the stock price that Samsung provides misleading information to its investors – OR, that Samsung investors are retarded!

      Or, maybe both?

      1. Ah yes, my young padawan, but if you check the HTS and dark pools, you’ll see a trading blitz to test the feasibility Samsung could be devastated in the mobile space by the courts and their shareholders.

  3. I believe the dictionary points to Samsung in it’s definition of a scumbag.

Yes, they have a BIG lack in morals. However, boycott of Samsung-branded TVs, washers, dryers, and microwaves products isn’t the issue. I am unaware of deception and scumbagging in those industries by Samsung. However, it may be there too!

Apple needs to stop buying from Samsung! Why help them entrench in any market Apple is using, buying from or intending to dominate? This is stupid and much like shooting yourself in the foot. Time to undo this ongoing mistake.

Apple, consider buying up supplies and source companies that Samsung requires. STARVE THEM OUT OF THE MARKET! It works better than using lawyers. May be cheaper too.

  4. I saw an article somewhere from some analyst today who claimed that Apple was headed the way of Blackberry, sliding into obscurity. Deutsche Bank started coverage of Apple today with a Buy rating and a price target of $650. Of these two news items, I like the 2nd better, but the market appears to be heeding the former.

  5. Any stunning display of the lack of ethics and integrity from journanalyst and analysts butt wait they’ll be able to get away with.

“There’s an old saying in Tennessee — I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.”

  6. MDM please keep copies of this and refer to them every time someone puts out sales reports for tablets. The total BS about sales makes the sales over time reports useless. As in Samsung has increased in tablet X% YOY. The reports are about old data, but how can one trust new data? I hope Samsung investors make Samsung report sold figures on all products. I believe we would see a big drop in their phone market too. Same could go for Amazon. The big looser is B&N, they killed their Nook because they thought they were way behind in sales. If they would have known the truth they may have stayed in the market, and had people keep investing in them; could be good for a lawsuit. It will be fun to see the speed of the backpedaling and excuses of IDC, Gartner and Strategy Analytics.

  7. This may be one reason Apple has kept perusing the lawsuit. Even if it does not collect a lot of money from damages, they have exposed the BS about Samsung high sales. Also the BS behind the market analyst who constantly slam Apple and feed the “Apple is doomed” crowd. This could improve Apple’s stock price. Epically now that fund mangers are going to have to rethink not just the tablet market, but also phone market. Not just who is winning, also the overall size of both markets is now in question.

  8. It’s one thing for Samsung to fake sales figures. It’s a business and not all businesses do the right thing.

But it’s quite another thing for journalists and media outlets to report things that are false. They are meant to convey truth to the public. It’s their core business. Yet it’s become obvious that in their own pursuit of sales and page clicks truth has become secondary.

I’d like to see these guys brought to justice.
