Comcast document mentions future Apple set-top box

“Inside a document published by Comcast on Tuesday, the company gives a nod to a future Apple set-top box, even though Apple hasn’t introduced one yet,” Brian X. Chen reports for The New York Times. “Comcast wrote the document to accompany filings made by Comcast and Time Warner Cable explaining to regulators why they should be allowed to merge.”

“In the document, Comcast alludes to Apple’s video services in a section describing competition coming from several technology companies offering digital TV services,” Chen reports. “When mentioning Apple’s plans, Comcast distinguishes Apple’s current Apple TV from a different set-top box that is still in development. ‘Apple tablets are viewing platforms for cable services even while Apple offers an online video service, Apple TV, and explores development of an Apple set-top box,’ David L. Cohen, an executive vice president at Comcast, said in the document, which is posted on the company’s public policy blog.”

Chen reports, “The mention of a new Apple TV comes in line with recent reports that Apple has been in talks with Comcast to team up on a streaming video service that would be included on a future Apple set-top box.”

  1. I would buy an “Apple set-top box” in a hart beat. I would move my Apple TV2 to another HDTV in that house. I gave the first generation to my son a long time ago.

Can I test one for you Apple? I will not tell anyone about it. Really!

  2. I am trying to work out why set-top-box MUST = Cable receiver…

It is a generic term meaning a box the is designed to be place on top if you TV set… Would ATV already qualify? Isn’t it likely what they are referring to is simply ATV4 in generic terms?
