Analyst: Korean firm making 65-inch OLED sample panels for Apple iTV

“An unnamed local display maker is reportedly making sample display panels for Apple’s iTV, which is expected be mass-produced next year, analysts said this week,” Shin Ji-hye reports for The Korea Herald. “‘The company is making 65-inch organic light-emitting diode sample panels for Apple’s iTV in collaboration with Apple,’ said Lee Seung-woo, an analyst at Seoul-based IBK Securities.”

“Speculation has been mounting that Apple‘s iTVs will be rolled out this year following numerous delays. However, multiple sources say that the plan has once again been deferred to 2015,” Shin reports. “‘Around 2 million Apple‘s iTVs with 65- and 77-inch liquid crystal displays were expected to hit the market in the second half of this year. However, Apple employees visited this local company in October 2013 to delay the plans to next year,’ said a source close to the matter on Saturday. ‘Following the visit, the display maker’s stock prices plunged.'”

“The delay is reportedly due to Apple’s attempt to shift LCD panels to OLED apart from the shortage of content supply. If Apple chooses OLED panels for its TV, this local manufacturer will become the first vendor, the sources said,” Shin reports. “‘Though the yield rate of OLED panels is still not high for mass production, they are considered to be the best panels for TVs because of its high definition and the potential of curvedness,’ said John Seo, an analyst at Shinhan Investment.”

    1. A bigger screen iMac with a 36″ or 42″ screen would work better and shake up the overall market. In the last 3 years all music and most video is going thru a 27″ iMac. I don’t even made it make downstairs to the flat screen anymore, it’s obsolete like the home stereo component system.

    1. I looked at the sharp 4k at Apple store the other day. I was really surprised to see that hooked up HDMI, it was 30htz.
The mouse movement across the pro was slightly choppy.

If there is a 77″ Apple TV I will buy one 🙂

  1. When people call it the “iTV” it shows just how little research they do. ITV is a TV channel in the UK and was started in the 60’s. There is a reason it is called Apple TV and not iTV. Steve Jobs slipped up in it’s introduction calling it iTV then quickly corrected himself, shows how much they wanted the iTV name. Someone who is paid to do research and write about a product should know a little about it’s history.

  2. Curvedness? Really? So only one person (or a cozy two) can get the ultimate viewing experience? This is another grasp from the tv manufacturers to get people to upgrade. Not buyin….

  3. A South Korean journalist reports in April ’14 on a meeting that ostensibly occurred in Oct ’13 from a source “close” to the matter. This South Korean journalist says that Apple is again delaying a product. This same South Korean journalist slips in a little dig (“…apart from the shortage of content supply.”)

Remind me: What country does Samsung call home?

  4. I doubt it will ever happen, because it makes no sense for a seller of unique, high-margin products to enter a commodity market.

If it does happen, the logo should involve an image of an apple with a bite taken out of it by the shark it just jumped.
