“Just five months after its release, OS X Mavericks is seeing adoption rates in the range of 40 percent to almost 50 percent depending on the tracking source,” Eric Slivka reports for MacRumors.
“The significant growth in Mavericks users demonstrates the benefits of Apple’s move to drop the price of its latest OS X update to zero in an effort to encourage users to upgrade,” Slivka reports. “Analytics firm Chitika is out with a new report today showing Mavericks usage at 40 percent of page impressions in the United States and Canada over the week of March 17-23… “Net Applications is yet another analytics firm with a significant user base to measure data from, and that firm saw Mavericks with a 45 percent share of the OS X base in its February data.

i wish i was not in the 50%, i prefer Mountain Lion more then this buggy Mavericks, This Mavericks is slow and and the beach ball appears more often, hardly ever saw the beach ball in ML. Opening apps like iPhoto, iTunes and safari is slower. Also when i first log in after turning on the computer it takes longer to get to the main screen, before after typing the password it would take me straight to the main page and the docking apps already ready, not now
I have to agree. I am a huge Apple fan, but I regret upgrading my iMac to Mavericks. My iMac is a 2009. I realize it is not new, but it was very “snappy” until I installed Mavericks. Using iPhoto is now painfully slow. It should not take 2-5 minutes for iPhoto to start up and become responsive.

I had the exact same problem. Repairing permissions fixed it. Mavericks has since been faster for me than ML. My iMac is late 2011, though.
How do you repair permission, can you please provide a step by step process, we could really use it, thanks
I have to agree with you. Safari has been driving me nuts; the other day it bounced 38 times before opening, and mail isn’t very snappy anymore either.
It was acting boggy recently with only Safari and Mail opened, and when I checked on Activity Monitor it was using 3.85 GB out of 4 GB. I finally decided to up the RAM and ordered the max of 16 GB from OWC. Should get here by this weekend, and I sure hope it helps.
Mavericks has improved my experience on my iMac Extreme 2009 and I could never go back to Lion.
The next Mac I buy will, without doubt, come installed with Mavericks.

That said, IMO 10.6 is still the best OSX ever…
Open “Applications”; find “Utilities” folder; open “Disk Utility”. Select your hard drive on the left, click “Repair permissions” near the bottom.

Apple is slowly but surely losing its way in the Mac world. Things no longer “just work”.
For example, Apple’s process for making a bootable OS X 10.9 restore drive on a USB stick is a ridiculous kludged mess. It requires the use of a 3rd party utility, or a combination of Terminal and Disk Utility and at least an hour of work. Just to have a bootable copy of what Apple now considers Freeware!! I can’t believe how difficult Apple makes this basic and critical backup solution for everyone who doesn’t live connected to the internet 24/7.
After 5 months with Mavericks, it is undoubtedly the worst piece of software Apple has ever released to the public. I suspect the 50% adoption rate is because it’s FREE, not because it’s in any way superior to Apple’s past offerings. Time to downgrade and wait to see what Apple decides to foist upon us with 10.10. With any luck, Apple will stem the steady decline we’ve seen in OS-X that began with Lion.
