Facebook buys Oculus: Why Apple hasn’t missed the boat on virtual-reality

“When Facebook acquired Oculus Rift for $2 billion, Mark Zuckerberg announced that virtual-reality was the natural follow-up to mobile as a platform,” Luke Dormehl reports for Cult of Mac.

“Following the acquisition, Cult of Mac published an article asking which companies Apple should look at buying after missing the boat on Oculus Rift,” Dormehl reports. “But has Apple really missed out on virtual-reality?”

“In fact, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that Apple has been investigating this area for the better part of a decade: well before Oculus Rift appeared on Kickstarter,” Dormehl reports. “More importantly, Apple owns patents — including what look to be some fairly comprehensive ones covering head mounted displays.”

  1. Anyone remember QuickTime VR? In the early 2000s there were even web sites which let you tour locations using the technology. Apple’s been ahead of the curve on VR for decades.

      1. AR and VR are 2 different things.

        AR modifies the world around you. Most commonly information is provided as a layer on top of a real image.

        VR puts you in a different world. Everything created is fake though may be based on a real location or could put you on Mars.
