Obama administration testing Samsung and LG Phones, not Apple iPhone

“The White House is testing smartphones from Samsung Electronics Corp. and LG Electronics Inc. for internal use, a person familiar with the matter said, threatening one of the last and most high-profile strongholds of BlackBerry Ltd,” Will Connors reports for The Wall Street Journal. “”

“The devices are being tested by the White House’s internal technology team and the White House Communications Agency, a military unit in charge of President Barack Obama’s communications, the person said,” Connors reports. “The tests are in the early stages, the person said, and any implementation of Samsung or LG phones is still ‘months away.’ There was no indication that Mr. Obama is switching from his modified BlackBerry.”

Connors reports, “Apple’s iPhone isn’t part of the testing program, the person familiar with the matter said.”

MacDailyNews Take: As we wrote back in January 2009:

Forget for a moment about the security issues that Android delivers so proficiently (see below): Should the U.S. President be using an inferior foreign-made device… when a superior device has been created by a U.S. company? It seems logical that the U.S. President should be supporting U.S. companies.

  1. Would love to see a press release from Apple or a quip from Tim Cook expressing disgust with the rumors that the iPhone is not in the running.

What would really be a good twist, is if the devices they are testing are the old style models that were the subject of the recent Samsung v. Apple litigation that the Judge denied an import ban on.

  2. I agree in principle. But what if Android allows White House to customize their phones for greater security etc., unlike the iPhone’s more curated hands-off experience? There’s something to be said for that.

  3. From worldwide apology tours to dangerous, weak appeasement, if it’s not obvious by now, you’re blind and deluded:

Obama hates The United States of America.

Putting “hope” in a candidate because he promises “change” – without knowing what that change may be – is a frighteningly dangerous proposition.

    Experience matters. Character matters.

    1. I seem to remember a New Year’s pledge to tone things down and be less incendiary. Was it a lie or just a broken promise?

I am no fan of the President and did NOT vote for him in either election, but the over the top flaming that comes from the radical NeoCON RepubliKKKan right is beyond the pale.

This kind of thing is done by the Military and NSA. A guy I served with in the Army worked in the White House Communications Office (predecessor of current name) and assures me it is anything but political.

White House communications are subject to securing by the NSA or meeting NSA standards- spying is but one of their roles. Android is easily modified and iOS is not- by Apple’s choice.

As to the buy American bullshit, Android phones and iPhones are assembled in China- The People’s Republic of China.

      1. Gee, I can’t understand why anyone would complain about the current white President Barack Obama, who got his signature legislation, Obamacare passed on three promises – you can keep your doctor, you can keep your current plan and you will save about $2500 per year. All bald faced lies done so the bill would pass. Now the lies are exposed. He also said he did everything he could to save the lives of the Americans in Libya when in fact he did exactly ZERO. He let them die after he had denied requests for increased security for about 6 months. Now, the “nicer tone” – Obama has admitted his IRS was used to punish his political opponents. He admitted it while not doing anything to stop the use of the IRS to destroy opponents which is still going on and includes the EPA.

Obama is a pure thug, but Democrats like a law breaking scum if he is their guy, as long as he is white like Obama.

        1. Re- Kent
1-The ACA was written in Congress and the Republicans refused to work on the bill. The fact it was modeled upon a Heritage Foundation Proposal was chosen to encourage Republican inclusion.
2-The Libyan incident was run from AFRICOM in Stuttgart with the resources available to it. The Republican House CUT an Obama Administration requested INCREASE in funding for Embassy/Consulate security.
3- The IRS was found to have investigated ANY group that espoused anti-tax or anti-government positions regardless of political bent. Liberal Groups were investigated as well. Ask All Souls Pasadena about the GOP removing their tax exempt status under Bush for speaking out against theWar of choice in Iraq.

Do your homework and stop spouting talking points from Slanthead Hannity.

        2. The ACA was an entirely Democrat bill – 2500 pages nobody could read before it was passed. That is why it is all lies.

The President is Commander In Chief. He did not get anything done to save the lies. He went to play cards w Reggie Love.

The IRS harrassment is the way a commie thug who is lawless deals with opponents.

        3. Wrong, Darwin. Really wrong. Obama is the head of the Democrat (noun) party, not the democratic (adjective) party. On every ballot in the USA, his party is listed as “Democrat,” not to be confused with the adjective describing political processes supporting individual voting rights (democratic). Every ballot in the USA lists the main opposition party as “Republican.” There is no abbreviated word “Republic” associated with the party in any sense.

Kent is correct: Any initiative supported by Reid and company falls under the aegis of “Democrat” . . . not “democratic.” The ACA is a Democrat initiative, period.

        4. One is a Democrat, the party is The Democratic Party of the United States.
          Do your homework.
          From Wikipedia
“Democrat Party” is a political epithet used in the United States for the Democratic Party. The term has been used in negative or hostile fashion by conservative commentators and members of the Republican Party in party platforms, partisan speeches and press releases since 1940.

        5. You should inform your self of the legal name of the party, not the Faux-news, talking head pejorative fantasy.

Or just start calling yourself Falsax.

        6. Quiviran – Truax is a very smart leftist. He knows a whole lot. Most of what he knows is not true. But he has high self esteem, which is important.

        7. I evolved. I overcame being raised in the Baptist Church in a Republican House District and having been taught that the USA is always #1 in everything.

Travel, read, open your eyes, have an adult beverage with someone who has a different viewpoint and discuss things. Read/Listen to people who disagree with your positions on things and test it in the light of truth.

The problem with America is far too many have never set foot outside their corner of the world, only know people (mostly) like themselves, watch/read/listen to like minded people and are set in their worldview on everything. These same people hold to the belief that they live in the greatest country on earth and that we are #1 in everything important.

If you have travelled or lived outside the United Staes you know that is simply not true.

        8. In other words, you “devolved”. You had a great inheritance and you have thrown it away. That’s OK. The world needs stupid people – just not so many that we elect an idiot like Obama twice. Once is enough to remind everyone of the fallen nature of man and the fact that we are not evolving but instead decaying.

        9. “The IRS was found to have investigated ANY group that espoused anti-tax or anti-government positions regardless of political bent. Liberal Groups were investigated as well. Ask All Souls Pasadena about the GOP removing their tax exempt status under Bush for speaking out against theWar of choice in Iraq.

Do your homework and stop spouting talking points from Slanthead Hannity.”

And regardless of who was investigated, the IRS investigating people because they are critical of the present administration is not only un-American, it’s illegal. This criminal and his henchmen need to go now!

        10. The IRS under Obama was ILLEGALLY investigating groups that were raising money for Obama’s opponents and sitting on their 501c applications until after the elections. That is a federal CRIME, not simply doing their jobs.

        11. The IRS audited Christine O’Donnell and her entire family the day after she announced she was running for the Senate in Delaware. They also released inaccurate tax data (lies) about her to hurt her campaign. That is the IRS doing Obama’s political dirty deeds. There are hundreds of other examples. Nixon was run out of office for less. Obama would be impeached by now if he were not untouchable because he is White.

        12. So it is OK to have the IRS destroy the lives of law abiding citizens if Bill Maher (who spends most of his spare time getting STDs in hottubs at the Playboy Mansion)?

You agree Obama did this and you think it is OK “because she is a loser.” No, you are a loser and a reprobate. Look it up.

        13. I realize you have a 3rd grade understanding, but you don’t have to go on a Comedy Central show to expect the protection of the law from corrupt officials. All she needed was to have a President who respects the rights of all citizens, not just those in his party. But our President was raised as a communist and spent time after college in Chicago, where thuggery is the main political virtue. So, we have a lawless country because idiots like you don’t hold your party to any standard of legal and Constitutional behavior. In other words, you are a thug enabler.

        14. Everything I said is a well know fact. Especially the LIES Obama used to sell his communist health care plan which would not have passed if he did not lie.

If you are too lazy and too ignorant to know the basics of what is happening you deserve the chains that you are now snapping on your own hands and feet.

      2. I voted for Obama twice, based on the actions of the previous Republican president and Congress people. Then, when he was safely re-elected, he turned from saying nothing about gun control to a rabid anti-2nd Amendment president. He participated in, or allowed the DOJ to illegally run guns across the US border to Mexico for political advantage.

Obama presided over the IRS as it went after his campaign opponents’ financing organizations. He accepted campaign money and help from Google and Amazon, then later unleashed his DOJ and the federal courts against their rival, Apple.

Obama was nowhere to be found the night the embassy was attacked and Americans murdered.

He promised to close Guantanamo Bay prison. He promised to end our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The only movements I’ve seen in that direction were timed to promote his reelection.

The man and his regime are crooks. They are for sale to the highest bidder. I’m a civil libertarian, and I demand honesty and fair dealing from my government. In the last year I have had a complete change of heart about Obama. I didn’t want to believe he was dirty. I’ve finally awakened.

        1. I am no fan of Obama, but the false outrage of those on the NeoCon right has little basis in fact.

I wish they would put forward useful criticism that might be used to actually get something done. They seem happy to throw mud in the gears and then point at the broken machine saying- “I told you it doesn’t work”.

        2. You want to see what the liberals can do? Try living in California. They have virtually destroyed our state. Now they are working on the other 49 under the current administration.

        3. Darwin is busy mutating our country so we can be more like the better foreign countries he has visited – like Cuba and Venezuela and North Korea which are not awful capitalist oil consuming countries like America.

        4. Last I checked Jerry Brown had balanced the budget and was talking fiscal restraint to set aside cash for a rainy day fund.
The new election system (top 2) will take care of the fringe pols from all corners.
Just like Washington- it takes someone other than a Republican to balance the budget.

        5. Yes, Brown’s innovative 110% tax on income has helped by convincing the higher intellect people to go to Texas or Nevada and so the cost to provide roads and services for them and the companies they own and move as well has cut California’s expenses. Once everybody leaves it will actually be in the black.

  4. As soon as you insert that NSA code into iOS, Apple, you’ll start winning all kinds of government contracts, U.S. rulings, and court cases.

(Brought to you by Carl’s Jr.)

    1. It would be funny if it wasn’t so embarrassing. Hardly surprising. The next presidential election can’t get here soon enough for America.

Brought to you by Imo’s Pizza and world famous Ted Drewes frozen custard.

  5. This is a non-issue. Apple makes great turnkey products… The Government usually doesn’t do turnkey and especially when it comes to security. Everything that government does is customized and specialized. This is not Apple’s arena, Apple knows this and is fine with this. Apple allows for no customization of the OS from a kernel perspective (heck even a consumer perspective) thus the government can’t do some of the things they need or want to do to lock down the device to a desired configuration. Android may be awful (in most cases, not all) out of the box but it allows the government to go into the underlying *NIX based OS and change all sorts of things to their liking. Heck they can even change the base OS it’s running on to a version of SE Linux (Security Enhanced Linux) if they wanted. Apple does not allow this level of customization (nor do they need to) thus it cannot be made truly secure from a government and military perspective. Consumer and general enterprise is one thing; Military and secure branches of the government is an entire different beast. This has nothing to do with which platform is ‘better’ or which platform is ‘preferred’. This all boils down to which platform is best for the application it will be used for and the only answer in this case is Android… Who cares though? Not like this is going to hurt Apples feelings; they have plenty of customers.

Additionally, MDN’s take is completely naive and biased to the point of being illogical.

      1. Most of your articles you linked to are a misrepresentation at best. For instance, yes the Pentagon did do their pilot of iPhones (and Android for that matter) however the program was eventually put on hold indefinitely for security concerns… Which further proves my point. Sure, not all branches of the government are as secure as others so in my previous statement maybe I shouldn’t have made a blanket assertion about ‘the government’ and security however I’ve worked in government IT at many different agencies through my career and have led many mobile initiatives at several of them so I know first hand what the issues were. Heck it took Apple forever just to get FIPS compliant certification and that was for the old OS’s and old devices… Last time I checked the 4S, 5, and 5S devices aren’t on the FIPS list because of security and any version of iOS 6.X or higher isn’t on there either. This means that many many gov agencies couldn’t roll these devices out even if they wanted to. Anyhow, that’s too much real information for you apparently. You would rather spoit off with info you read on an enthusiast blog… Because we all know that the information on blogs is always correct right?

      1. You, sir, have no clue what you are talking about. Android IS Unix based. Java isn’t an operating system, and certainly no alternative to Unix.

Officially, Java doesn’t even run on Android. Android runs a “unique” application environment, which just happens to be a complete rip-off of Java, but made to be just different enough that they don’t have pay the licensing fees to use Java.

      2. iOS is UNIX, Android is UNIX as well… Google forces devs to use a unique “Java like” environment for applications that run in a VM on Android devices. This is done for 2 reasons, so that 1.) They can increase security since as I’ve already mentioned out of the box Android is less secure. They don’t want apps running natively as that would be an even larger security concern.
2.) It helps them cope with the fragmentation of the android platform and allows OEM’s to change things in the underlying UNIX environment without breaking app compatibility.
Being an Apple fan doesn’t mean you ignore everything else, it means you understand everything and you make an educated choice (keyword that’s lacking from you response is educated). Else you just sound like a clueless wanker… which you’ve already proven is the case. Clear now?

    1. Sorry, Michael, but as someone who works in a secure government facility, you couldn’t be more wrong. We use standard Microsoft security (using smartcards – the DoD “Common Access Card”); there’s really nothing custom about it at the user level, and no special software installed on our Windows machines. Mobile devices are not allowed, but I happen to know that Apple’s security is far more compliant with and adherent to standards than is Android, and Apple has the further advantage of “instant wipe,” which Android does not have.

  6. Being in Canada, I haven’t followed the deeper goings-on of the Obama administration but over the last few years, haven’t a number of ex-Google people infiltrated many levels of the administration? Too much influence by and towards Google (Android)?

  7. The truth, hard though it might be for Apple fanboys to accept, is the President doesn’t see any advantage in using iOS 7 over Android KitKat. As a matter of fact, iOS 7 is clunkier and uglier than Android which makes it not so usable in the President’s hands. That is the reason why he’s going with Samsung or LG and not Apple.

I’m sure if Apple woke up from its dream state and issued a new iOS that is actually usable, like iOS 6 was, the President will see fit to revise his opinion. Until then I hope there are no hard feelings but we have to base our choice of OS on usability first and foremost. iOS 7 does not fit that bill.

    1. The truth, hard though it might be for the few remaining Obama fanboys to accept, is this president is a worthless, unpatriotic, new agey, bag of shit.

  8. Obama to the president of South Korea: I promise you to bring more jobs to your country. Count me in for your country next president election, I am thinking of changing nationality.

    1. “I am thinking of changing nationality… again.”

Sorry. Had to go there. I know it is a bunch of hooie, but thought some would get a laugh out of it. Most will flame. I’m okay with that. 🙂

  9. I understand this very well because I have worked with the Federal government for 50 years in computer related areas. They always want to put their requirements on everything. This is how you get a $600 toilet seat.

  10. Obama is a thug. He likes dealing with other thugs so he can know what to expect. Of course, Obama also like Eric Schmidt, because he helps collect information about the masses (subjects, not citizens) that can be used for control purposes. And Eric Schmidt like Samsung much more than Apple. And we all know Apple needs to be punished for making a lot of money overseas in the capitalist system and not bringing it home so Obama can rake off his 35%. So, Apple will be punished. Until is shows proper worship of the big eared, vacationing, jet setting, egomaniac, destroyer of America.

      1. Racist? What the hell are you talking about? I don’t despise Obama because he is white. I despise him because he is a tyrant. And a liar. And he hates the military. And he hates America. Those are valid reasons. The fact he is a white destroyer of America is not the issue. It is not his color. It is his preference for goon government tactics.

      2. TRUTH likes Obama because he is white and. TRUTH does not think a white person can be a good president. If we had a black man, like Allen West or Clarence Thomas or Ken Blackwell as President I think the country would be much better off. But TRUTH hates blacks and thinks they should just stay in the ghetto and worry about their EBT card reloading. Me, I don’t like Obama regardless if he is white but I would love the black men I listed. I already TRUTH hates them though because of the color do their skin.

      1. I can. He is an arrogant, narcissistic, lazy thug who has his goons do the work of attacking opponents in illegal ways and destroying the Constitution. He is pure thug. And he likes it.

  11. #MyStupidGovernment at work.

The devices are being tested by the White House’s internal technology team and the White House Communications Agency, a military unit in charge of President Barack Obama’s communications

  12. OK – so you are equally as ignorant as an Obama voter. You might as well have voted for Pat Paulsen. The Green Party is cool with government takeover of private industry. It believes oil is evil. It believes it is OK to kill bald eagles if you are killing them with taxpayer subsidized windmills. It believes it is OK to strip thousands of acres of trees if the purpose is to grow corn for ethanol so cars can run on corn instead of evil oil. The Green Party believes in Global Warming though it hasn’t warmed for 15 years and no prediction of environmental catastrophe from the left has EVER come true. But communist countries have been very effective at creating environmental disasters like Chernobyl and the air in China.

  13. And this is why Apple keeps them on the market. Because contrary to all the FUD out there the iPhone 5C is actually selling quite well and many people do like them. I’m sure Apple knew all along that the 5C wasn’t going to be there top seller and never intended it to be. But the FUD rages on against Apple for no Fucking reason.
