“China Mobile Ltd. added about one million new iPhone users last month after it started offering the popular smartphone in mid-January, Chief Executive Li Yue said Thursday,” Lorraine Luk reports for The Wall Street Journal.
“‘We added 1.34 million new 4G users in February and most of them are iPhone users. We are happy with the progress as we are still building our 4G network and the coverage is only available in some major cities,” China Mobile Chairman Xi Gouhua told The Wall Street Journal,” Luk reports. “Mr. Xi said the new iPhone users could buy the popular smartphones from multiple channels including its outlets and Apple’s official stores in China and Hong Kong. He declined to disclose the number of iPhones sold at China Mobile’s own distribution network.”
Luk reports, “Analysts have expected China Mobile could boost Apple’s iPhone shipments this year by 15 million to 30 million. In the most recent fiscal quarter ended Dec. 28, the Cupertino, Calif. company sold 51 million iPhones globally.”

China Mobile has 4G in only a few places so far. People in other parts of the country are not 4G customers (yet), even when buying an iPhone. So it is not at all accurate to say CM added 1M new iPhone users. They added some (unknown) larger number, of which 1M are also 4G customers.
Shhh…it’s Wednesday-Friday. Shorts need to make their nut. 1M is not great while 2M – 3M is very good. This is why “the reports” are emphasizing sales only related to 4G, not the reality of 4G, 3G and 2G sales. The big picture would make the shorts and/or call sellers lose.
